In our family we didn't choose to do it at birth for our son, and then had to do it at a later age for medical reasons. If I ever had another son I would have it done at birth.

@doug6352 Not worldwide at all. In fact 8t is unusual in EU. It is considered a health matter in places where access to clean water is not guaranteed.

I quoted you the American Academy of Pediatrics opinion because I am an American, and I wrote "worthwhile" not "worldwide". When our son was born I was swayed by the emotional arguments against circumcision, but actual experience has convinced me I was mistaken, purely on a health and not a religion basis. And of course we don't have dirty water here. So you will believe what you like, and I will rely on both scientific opinion and personal family experience to reach the opposite conclusion.

@doug6352 Doug, I don't believe what I like, I review evidence, seek out opinion from reputable sources and listen to advice Both my sons were born in USA and I was put under enormous pressure to have them circumscised. I reviewed the medical evidence and given the falling rates of HIV in the west, wide and sensible use of condoms and access to clean water, the need is not there. (The evidence is inconclusive even from countries were the need is greater). This practice is not universal and not necessary...so what are we left with...oh yeah...god. I was not going to mutilate my male children in the same way as I wouldn't mutilate my female child just coz I was told god expected it. I understand this is common in USA but it is just tradition. It is not necessary.
