Not strictly a plant, or even a fungus, the slime moulds are in many ways a group apart. (Think the sixties science fiction horror "The Blob." with Paul Newman, and you are still not really close to the wonder of slime moulds. )

Is it edible?

One track mind. But no I do not think so, you actually have to be grateful that it has not started to eat you. (Yet.)
