They only seek a life where they have (illusory) control, because sometime, way back when, they were traumatized in a state of powerlessness. Now they only have the INSTINCT to prevent that from ever happening again.
(It's actually related to the foraging instinct which is the fall-back behavior for people with Alzheimer's)
