We have (for want of a better word) a belief system based on logic. Religious people do not. One of the logical maxims we use is Occam's razor. ie. If you hear hoofs outside, think horses over zebras. Now that does not mean zebras are impossible, just highly unlikely, so a higher degree of proof would be required. God botherers hear unicorns.

That presumes that the believer has enough personal honor to discuss the issue rationally. Many believers do not have such honor.
