How do you handle people when they ask, how can you have morals and ethics without believing in god?
I would pose a question for them...first where did you get your morals before you believed in god? Second would your own morals change if there was no god? I think when it comes to religous people your best response is in the form of question that will get them thinking because they tend to fail in the area of free thinking and rely on what they are taught in religion alone.
I'm never asked that. My morals and ethics are never in dispute. LOL
you must have some weird friends , never been asked that........what is "How do house" ?
Aotocorrect hates me
I tell them if you need the promise of eternal reward and the threat of eternal damnation to be a decent human being to other human beings, you probably aren’t a decent human being.
Life is precious, even without faith.
I point out the true source of morality and ethics, which is society. Religion appropriates it from society and claims to be its inventor and protector.
I also point out that claimed religious morality can not differ much from societal morality or else society would identify it as immoral, and sanction it accordingly. For example, Christians used to own slaves, and there are Bible verses instructing people how to own (and be) slaves, but that would be immoral today, as societal morality has evolved in that regard. So Christians now pretend to be the source of the moral outrage against human slavery in all its forms, but they are really just going along with the rest of society.
Just say you act moral because you are hedging your bets. That confuses people. Haha.
Good one!
I just tell them that even animals know right from wrong because we live in a society and it's in the best interest of all to get along and value life.
My morality comes from within. It's partly based on the golden rule and partly on compassion and empathy for others. BTW, there are plenty of Xians who are evil too, how do you explain that?
