So many people believe that there is no morality without religion. They believe that the morality lessons taught in church or whatever is where we drive out moral base. Obviously I disagree, considering the platform, but I think that our moral code is an intrinsic thing. We are born with it. It's an individual thing, which explains why siblings can have different sets of morals. Any thoughts?
If you accept the idea that people choose their religion, then you have to also accept that people choose the morality associated with that religion. Therefore people are able to make choices about morality.
Since people can make choices about morality, why do we need religion?
I agree. People are born with varying ratios/ levels of empathy and intelligence. I grew up in a church full of "real christians" who had little empathy for nonbelievers. No evangelizing and mingling with non believers ect. They had no problem with being asked by god to kill babies and all of the atrocities committed in the OT.
Most of the young people totally left that fundamentalist sect and became far more tolerant and human. Some stayed though. Has to be biologically part of us.
As a side note moral behavior can be proven to have evolutionary roots. Just think about that guy at work who is an asshole; not so long ago he would have been kicked out of the tribe and isolated from the gene pool.
I would disagree as well.
I have great morals and no of any aspect..
I just don't use them a lot because I'd hate to wear them out.
Use it or lose it honey. Lol
I think the easiest thing to look at is conversion. Most religions that seem to push this narrative that they offer forgiveness or absolution with conversion. So, if you are a wonderful human being and never believe or convert you can't get into their afterlife, or you are punished. However, you could be the worst person ever and destroy peoples lives (rape, murder, torture, etc.) but be saved before you die and you get a pass. So, in those cases, those religions abandon morality for sycophant behavior and belief. It has nothing to do with character, but instead do you submit to that belief.
Just my thought.
