It is amazing to me how all the major religions were based on love and tolerance and are twisted by the religious leaders into hate and intolerance.

I cannot think of any major religion that was originally based on either love or tolerance. Moat tried to rewrite their histories later, but all arose and spread through violence, torture, and warfare.

What's amazing is how many religious people get love and hate mixed up. The pied pipers are nothing without the children who follow.

That's the problem with religion. It has become a way of controlling people. They preach love and tolerance, but with exceptions. Those exceptions always include people who are different or believe differently.
