Posting this again, as I deleted it the first time. An elderly friend of mine has been scammed, though I'm having a difficult time convincing HER of this, since she claims she received her promised money. (I'm fairly certain this money is going to turn turn out to be counterfeit.) Here's what went down with me: I decided to investigate this guy and his outfit.So she gave me her contact person's number. I texted him last night and after a brief exchange of info (I gave him no real information), he informed me that I was approved for 400,000$ Then came the catch: I had to pay "fees and certificates," a tidy little sum of 3000$ (cash). He promised to deliver the money by UPS. All I had to do was hand the driver an envelope full of money -WTF- and viola-I would rolling in dough (my words). After hearing I couldn't pay this, he kept varying the sum of money he offered and thus the fee. I felt like I was a participant on some scammer's version of "Let's Make A Deal!" So today, in order to report as many deets to the FTC as possible, I texted him again to say my bank needed documentation. I wanted his company's EXACT name, HIS title, and a link to their website. After giving me some BS about the league of billionaires (SERIOUSLY? I'm dying of laughter by now!), he finally coughs up a name that is suitably vague. OF COURSE no mention of this can be found anywhere on the net. But their website is "down for maintenance, due to hackers." Right. So finally, I see I've gotten all I'm going to get from him and tell him politely that I'm unable to meet his his requirements and wish him well on helping someone else. Then I reported his A$$ to the FTC. However, when I expressed my grave concerns and suspicions to my friend-she wouldn't tell me how much money she paid these people-she got angry at ME. (Oh, and he kept calling me "Madame." That's right up there with "dear" and "beloved" in scammerspeak. A big red flag. His English in general was...off.)
