Six months on the site. Looking Back

How the site has evolved since last year!

So I ask myself why I joined and what it is doing for me. So, this is how I see it:

My atheism -- not agnosticism because I don't call myself an agnostic -- is very important to me, at least until the world outgrows religion and the term will no longer be relevant, though that's not going to happen in my lifetime. I wanted to do here what I cannot do easily in normal life: interact with fellow atheists, yes about the issue of religious non belief, as well as other subjects.

Those who complain here about discussions about religion and atheism on this site strike me as odd. Like if someone joined a cat club and then complained about people talking about their cats! I've interacted with a lot of interesting people here since last December. Read about their stories and challenges. Would love to meet some face to face. Learned about how their views are similar or maybe dissimilar to mine.

There have been a few annoying agnostics complaining about atheism, unconvincingly; a few right wing nut jobs, well I meet them in life too; the odd new age pseudo religionist being 'spiritual', the occasional real religionist who seem as jittery here as a terrorist at an FBI lunch, and some, for the life of me I don't know why they are here, except maybe to get laid, as the saying goes. Well, I've learnt to take the rough with the smooth, avoid going down rabbit holes with those with whom it is better to agree to disagree with rather prolong the misery of ongoing battle.

All in all it has been fascinating, and me, not a social media person at all usually. And best of all, I know there are a lot of people out there like me, maybe not exactly on everything but close enough. Before this site I knew that, but now here I experience it. That means a lot.

So, for you six month-ers or longer, how's it working out for you?

Hi there, I liked your post a lot. I identify with what you have said . I think there are such a variety of eclectic members with differing views and differing motives for membership.

Most are good people like yourself who feel non-believers can plug in to the network to meet to share experiences and discuss issues surrounding their conclusions and how they arrived at them etc

From there..friendships can be formed with those that you have most in common with and some that you don't..but that's no bad thing.

I have learned a lot too about many aspects of religion and Atheism that if anything has reinforced my opinion about how dangerous and destructive religion is. I also learned that Athiesm is populated by such a diverse group of people who sometimes have nothing more in common than their Athiesm.
I have also met a considerable amount of people that make me want to be a better person..they inspire...

The great thing is you are free to talk and discuss any topic, which is great too. I liked your comment about cats..you are quite right..I do think with the amount of cat owning members here..the site could easily be an Agnostic/Athiest/Cat site. ??

Anyway I enjoyed your post.

Thank you.

As a cat lover, suits me. Very nice reply. Thanks.

I had to have a look, 6 months for me.
I agree with your post, thank you for it, but better, for how well it reads.
What I get from the site keeps changing, I was over regular on-line dating sites, too many fake people.
On here I realised the chances of finding someone local was unlikely so changed to community only.
I have met (virtually) many decent and real people and also wish it was possible to meet them face to face.
I value our discussions highly.
I am also atheist rather than agnostic, it does get hard seeing many topics repeated over and over, but I was doing the same thing when I joined. I could discuss cats all day fine.
Speaking of which I have fed the dogs and it is past Kat's dinner time so I best find her and attend to that.
I think we will be going a while longer on tis site.

Great reply. Thanks. I think it will a while longer for me too. To say the least. Unless of course the religious fanatics take over the site. Doubt that will ever happen. They don't know with whom they are messing. Over my cold, dead typing fingers! 🙂

I have been on here for over five months now. I almost at Level 8, so I believe I can comment since I have dedicated so much time on this site.

I saw an advertisement for agnostic as a dating site (on Facebook) for like-minded people and I was intrigued because the other dating sites I used were not working out for me. It is a dating site, but I discovered so much more. I found a community of people that I have a lot in common with. I am an agnostic. I don't think that will ever change. I don't agree with everyone about everything and I don’t think I ever will. However, we are all free thinkers on this site and anti-religion (for the most part).

I have virtually met many nice ladies on here as well as men. When the site created the groups, for me, it opened up a whole new sense of community. People love to discuss similar interests and the creation of the groups certainly assisted with that. For example, when I created my Music Fans group, I didn't know how well it would be received, but many people have joined and they are posting YouTube videos of the music they love. There have been many discussions about songs posted and that is great to see.

It is a dating site, but for me, the strongest thing about this site, and why people keep coming back, is a strong sense of community. It's obvious to me that this is what people want the most.

I really enjoyed reading your well thought out post and the comments on here. Thanks!

You know, it's funny, but I might never have found this site, not being a FB and social media person, if I hadn't bought a google home mini, which lead to my checking my google account, which lead to finding an atheist Google Atheism community group, which I joined for less than a week (dead), but on which I saw a poster's reference to this site (thanks to that person) which led me here. Something drew me to check it out. Otherwise I might still be oblivious to it. Praise Be. 🙂

@David1955 all hail the innernets! lol

Mine was a slow beginning here. There were times I wondered why I joined...but have since become very fond of enough people to keep me here.
Being that I joined due to the appeal of maybe finding a companion with the religious aspect out of the way was disappointed at first over all the religious discussion, then I calmed down over it. People truly still, unfortunately, need an outlet because some have been SEVERELY affected by religious damage and need the sounding board.
I usually don't click on those threads but once in awhile.. It's a needed facet for many and I don't begrudge them it for a hot minute.

Overall for the time being I'm quite content here.

I enjoy this site it's filled with a diverse group of people that I sometimes agree with and at other times not. If a subject is interesting and I have a thought, idea, or suggestion then I will comment. If everyone here had the same feelings, thoughts, ideas, and similar experiences I would find it boring.

I have been here since November and so far so good. 🙂

Nicely stated. I joined at the end of January, but still feel like an old-timer, watching it grow up! And that brings with it the terrible two's, teenage angst, and some who throw firebombs at people they don't agree with. Just like real life, as you said. I spend more time here now than on FB, which is how I found this site. As for the atheist/agnostic divide (and yes, it appears there is a much bigger divide than I would have thought), my answer will always be "why can't we all just get along?"

This site has brought me friends I will treasure for a long time to come. To know I can come here and vent, and mostly be supported. 🙂 Just like real life. 😀

The only way I could have described that better is having broken it into paragraphs … a recurring concern for some of us who too easily get lost in stacks of words 😕 Otherwise, beautiful, you’ve summarized my experience as well. So on to another half a year 🙂

Varn Level 8 May 18, 2018

I'm normally fastidious about paragraphs, as I agree with you about that, but when I entered the text it left out spaces and I didn't correct. On some devices the entry gets skewed sometimes. Thanks for the comment.

@David1955 There be paragraphs!

@Varn I appreciated the feedback. Thanks.

From the very moment I joined this site I could feel a certain warmth and a relaxed good natured 'atmosphere' - no obscenities, no personal animosities and no hatred of any kind. (Maybe I've just been lucky! 🙂)
I really like it here.

No obscenities? Really? Have you read any of the comments about Trump?

Hang around long enough and you will see obscenities, (many uttered by yours truly). All meant in good fun or judiciously applied. 🙂

I have only been here for a week or so, and I love it.

7

I realised that the algorithms which match people don't really work.

All in all, it's a good site I think. But I am slightly suspicious about it. This site costs money to run and is funded solely by anonymous donors. I'd like to know who they are and why they're doing it.

Ah, a healthy cynicism (not a bad thing) and a legitimate question.

I felt the same when I joined but I've never seen anything contrary to the goal and assurances given about the site. Not a single thing, eg advertisements, personal information, or anything of concern. And I'm a naturally very cautious person. I would not use Facebook, for example, if you paid me.

I, probably like many others here, often feel like I don't belong "out there" in the world at large. That goes away here, for me. The judgement is absent, and I don't have to think about getting into useless arguments about stuff I've made up my mind on. At 68 yrs old, I'm not out to revolutionize society, but I will speak my mind if solicited.

I have probably blocked more members than anyone else on here because I just don't want to bother with what I consider their nonsense. I've, no doubt, been blocked too. As previously stated, I'm not out to change people's minds, they can believe what they want to believe, and unless or until it interferes with my life, carry on.

I was on this site close to the origination. I made some statements-probably didn't explain myself well enough what I meant st the time- and was attacked for it, so I quit. I'm glad I came back. Things seem to be less contentious and a bit more tolerant, generally. My approach, and my method of expressing myself also changed, for the better, I think.

Anyway, glad you're here. Very thoughtful post, thanks.

P.S. sorry for so many "I's", not sure yet how to avoid that.

Interesting comment. I have a policy of not blocking, at least not yet. But I do ignore a few where further engagement is more or less futile. Just like life. Perhaps some ignore me too, I don't know. Oh, well, fair enough. Over time I have modified my engagement here, minimising heated exchanges. I think I have gotten better at it. I hope so. Always on a learning curve.

Since I have joined there has been a definitive positive evolution of the site itself. I have had the pleasure of meeting like minded intelligent and articulate members. It has been a cathartic positive experience. It was exactly what I needed. I went through a giant tramatic situation in my life in 2017. It has been a helpful, positive place. Thanks to all of my "new" friends here. 🙂

6

Well I have met you. Going well I'D say.

If only we were closer for that coffee. 🙂

@David1955 Oregon's worth the visit 🙂

Seven months here.Love this site. Feel like I've made friends here. Have spent time with one member-friendship resulted. Still trying to meet someone for ltr. Hope to travel and meet other members.

5

i'll tell you on the 20th of july 😉

but so far i'm quite chuffed to have found this precious community.

aw, what a kind thing to say, @Donotbelieve! thank you, i appreciate you being here totally too ❤

Agnostic, Atheism or dating site all I know it is for me !

Fair Enough

Just a follow up comment about how interesting the replies have been here. It's quite moving how some have noted how the site has helped them through personal challenges and struggles in various ways. It's a sanctuary for me too. I hope @Admin are pleased and even proud of that fact. They started the site for motivations known to them (I'll use the plural, but I'm not sure if that's right) and now can see how important it is for so many in various ways. If this site suddenly disappeared without trace a lot of people would suddenly find an empty void in their day and life, including me. May the site only get bigger and better, but never lose its uniqueness for people like us. And I know there are a lot more like us out there. We just need to connect more. Thanks to all.

I’ve only been here since April of this year, but I enjoy coming to this website and reading people’s posts. I feel I can answer truthfully without people harassing me about being an atheist or saying “I’ll pray for you.”

Also I love that one of the hashtags for this post is cats. Hahaha

I'm very new to this site. I have not yet posted anything, just navigating the lay of the land ? Thank you for sharing your experience it was very enlightening. In my daily life ,due to my work, I'm constantly talking with people. Mostly I have very little in common with these people. As a one time young agnostic and now atheist, due to a life of critical thinking and acknowledgement of science, I am so pleased to find a place to interact and talk with like minded people.

Reni Level 3 May 27, 2018

You've definitely found the right place. There are some religious and I would say pseudo religious folk here, but the great bulk of us, differences aside, are on the same page. Look forward to your contributions.

2

I have only been on for a couple months and have enjoyed interacting with other people who are not put off by my atheism. I liked your review of your first six months.

2

You believe this site evolved? I thought God created it!

2

Wow. I'm a spiritual agnostic so much of what you say attacks me. Doesn't sound very accepting or tolerant, to me.
Also, I also object to so many here going on endlessly complaining about religious people. I came here to avoid the subject of religion entirely.

Surely there is something more interesting to talk about than ranting against some myth.

I meant a few agnostics who have a problem with the atheist position. That definitely doesn't include you and your contribution.

Just because someone makes comments with regards to another's perspective does not mean they are being "attacked".

@jlynn37 nor should the comment(s) be taken so personally, imo. They're just opinions.

I agree there is too much "coming out" talk contrasting the faiths imposed upon us with our freedom from faiths ....and spiritual is a word we must own as we appreciate in awe beauty cosmos and evolution. ....it's NOT spiritual to say I reject religion while I attend Alcoholics Anonymous 12 step cults for gawd as you understand HIM ????? That's more than mythology that is court ordered incompetent quackery for addicts and drunks

I like to read people's biographies and their thoughts on atheism/agnosticism etc.

There is a vast range of experiences and thoughts on this site, even if mostly limited (in my experience) to non-religious, science-informed, left-leaning people.

My wife is a non-religious Muslim (possibly moving towards atheism). One of the uses of this site for me is to learn about experiences of (most-particularly, women) atheists who have come away from a religious background so I can speak with her sympathetically.

Being new to this site, your post is enlightening on what to potentially expect and appreciate the summary of your experience.

I will be on this site for 3 mos. in a week. I do agree this good place to talk to others that have similiar beliefs. At least here we can be free to express a open minded ideas and not closed my minded fools who believe in bs of religion.
