Do people become more bigoted as they age? My mom had never been the type to speak poorly of any group of people. But in recent, she has gone on tirades about Obama, Muslims, and now that Starbucks has stated they will allow anyone to sit or use the bathroom, she is appalled that the homeless will be stinking up the place and trashing the bathrooms. This coming from a woman who is all about LBGTQ rights and is agnostic.

Is this an age thing? It angers me when she speaks like this and I tell her she's wrong, but she'll just shut up and spew the hate at a later date.

Thoughts?

I come from a family of bigots.
My friends at high school, one was gay the other chinese, my first girlfriend after leaving school was a pacific islander my family just didn't want to know them, or me for that matter. I just go from bad to worse in their opinion.
I think I may have run out of things to shock them.

As we get older we get really tired of children not respecting toilets.

We want them to be clean. We want the room to be litter free.

Is this so wrong?

Depends if she has had the same view when she was younger. It’s hard to say. I could agree that some people as they get older could be more ranty and picky over things. But not sure...hmm.

I lot of people harbor racist tendencies. Most white people I know never deal with racism, or talk about it at all.

Many white folks feel it's just impolite to say negative things even if they are true. As people get older, they care less about being polite. So they start saying what they think it's true.

This is what I came here to say.

Dementia?

^^Yep. Not always, but frequently, from what I understand. Personality changes in general, in any direction. Bigotry is a common one.

How old is your mom? Do you think this could be a sign of some mental decline? Do you think she has become more fearful in general? This must be very upsetting to you.

She's only 63. No decline in mental health. Yes, it's very upsetting.

As we age brain tissue deteriorates and inhibitions are lowered.
