Long post So now that I'm no longer working there, I can get this off my chest. I worked for a pretty popular life insurance company for all of a month or so (I won't give the name because it doesn't reflect the company in any way). When I started there, I thought it was great. Finally a career opportunity where I can be myself and show my full potential. Unlike working in hospitality where they want you to bite your tongue and kiss some entitled guest's ass that comes to the hotel (just for them to fake a complaint about their service at the front desk and demand their money back. Can't afford the luxury hotel so they have to be cheap...I digress).

After meeting my coworkers my first week, I learned that pretty much everyone there was a minister of some sort. The office General manager was an ex pastor. His assistant manager was an elder of a church (and so was her husband). One of the girls they had me train with was a pastor, a beautician, and an insurance agent (She triple dipped in to her congregation for her income). My coworkers had their head so far up a god's ass, I couldn't see how they were able to function. Even the openly gay chick was blinded, which me being me, I'll never understand.

It was suffocating being there. Literally the only atheist in the room. I had to listen to them badmouth us as if we were monsters constantly. Got the strangest look when I defended atheism and other religions. I remember sitting off to the side feeling as small as a mouse. I couldn't handle anymore of their "non Christian" bashing. Had to tell them roughly (because this won't be word for word, and my heart was pounding hard) 'not all atheists are disgusting monsters as you make them out to be. There's good and bad people in all walks of life. To give atheism some credit, .02% of the US prison population is atheist. The rest are religious, and the majority of THOSE people are Christian and then Muslim. Everyone thinks they have the right belief system because it's either due to the geographical area or because it agrees with their way of thinking. Or both. People from other religions think the same about you and it's why people are killing each other.' I got my point across, somehow. And they just stared at me. The only line of defense they had was "you still need god. You can't be good without god.. You have to believe in something."

Usually I wouldn't have bitten my tongue at this point. I would have said what I was thinking. But I didn't. I wanted to point out the thousands of other gods worshiped by man, but theirs just so happened to be the most popular. I didn't because I thought I'd lose my job. My only regret to this day is that I didn't. But we parted on a bitter foot anyway. I had to split my commission with them. They knew I needed to provide for my kids. So those policies we set up with clients, the GM would intentionally postpone sending them to underwriters. I wasn't getting paid. It put me in a shit spot. They had money to fall back on. I didn't. I sacrificed a lot to give my family a better life with a new career. And the GM sends me a text demanding that I call him. It's 6 pm. He says "you're not a successful team member so far. I see you're heavy on the phones and people like you, but you're not bringing in the business. You need to decide if this is the right career for you." Basically, that was my performance warning. It has only been 3 weeks at this point. I stuck it out for another week. Still no pay. Complained to him. He made it my fault.
I started to feel like this was all because I defended atheism and other religions without outting myself. Since that day, they had kept their distance from me. I wasn't invited to the Halloween party for work, but showed up dressed up anyway. Wasn't invited to the team lunch or the meeting they had the last Friday before I quit. I came back from lunch and they were all huddled together in the office with pizza and punch.

After I was $600 in the hole for what I owed daycare, I quit. My bank account was overdrawn a little over $350. They waited until after I quit to send me $150. The last of my commission was sent two weeks after that. I struggled to get my account back in good standing. I was happy I didn't leave the hotel completely, but kicked myself because they only gave me 4 hours to work on Sundays.

Can't get anymore hours than that to this day (even after asking to come back full time). I can say, I'm truly happy to be away from those people. The debt I owe daycare is $850 that I'm slowly paying down (It cost me $307/week and thanks to my income amount I didn't qualify for assistance). Stuck trying to pick myself back up. My oldest 2 are in school. My baby is home with me during the day, and I babysit to pay this off. I let my phone get shut off to keep extra money in my pocket in case of emergency. I'm roughing all of this as a single parent. But through all this mess I'm in because they screwed me over for defending non-Christians, I'm happy. I feel like for the first time ever my head is clear. I never thought I'd see the day where I'd have to go back into hiding because of Christianity. When I realized what was going on and why, I left. It's shitty how hard it is to be the only atheist in a place of business. When I worked as an engineer, most of us were atheist. Maybe I got too comfortable. And at the hotel, we were pretty much forbidden to bring up any religious bs so it was cool. I think next time I'm going to pass on working with anyone whose background includes "I was once a pastor at XX church"...

You can get help from many nonprofits who help struggling young mothers. Ask around, don't be ashamed to ask for help. I've been there. Good luck.

Tough gig. Sorry it turned out that way. It's a no win situation. Defend yourself and you piss off your co-workers, remain silent and it boils in you. I put up with anti-semitism for the first 27 years of my life (including the beatings and the hostile comments) and then, as a prosecutor, exploded in a room full of cops, setting them straight. I don't put up with discrimination of any kind anymore and I feel better about it, but it's always a tough call. In the end you have to do what makes you feel ok. Thanks for sharing.

It seems to me (just from my own observations) that atheists are more "Christ" like in their actions and treatment of others than actual Christians. Sorry you went through that. Sounds like it was a nightmare to me, the neverending kind.

Honestly, if I dealt with that bullshit I would have contacted the more important people in charge of the hotel, like the district manager or whatever and told them they were talking about religion which is unprofessional in the work place and because you stated your opinion because they bad mouthed people so much, they treated you like crap. Just to see them all get fired. I'm an asshole like that. Then again, they probably would not have even done anything about it. -_-

Regarding hotel employment... the positions I was referring to was not “hotel work”... many large chain hotels provide offices, staff, computers, all for generating corporate clients in need of small, medium, large venues for national, regional, meetings, trade shows, conventions. Most are commercial, industrial, religious, etc. This type of work does not mix with the daily operations of walk in or room reservations, usually pays very well, three figures income is not unheard of...

Unfortunately facts don't dictate belief or faith, only feelings emulated from faith. For the religious faithers we need to keep that in mind if we are to be in a harmonious relationship with them. It's difficult to keep a peaceful state when they usually deny science which affects their acceptance the important politics of climate change and disease control for example. So you have to take a step back for the faithers sake to create a respectable balance otherwise they see you as a smart arse who will go to hell. I deal with this here sometimes in Australia, but when they bring up their dogma and I am compelled to defend atheists or science all I do is ask them questions that reflect factual conundrums, with the focus of letting the faithers trying to answer them. I usually follow this path until they actually starting to acknowledge the facts. This teachers me a lot about how feelings and sentiment are the core of the faithers we deal with instead of facts and science......... 😉

Good post... I heard engineer. What kind? The sky is opening up in Sulphur louisiana, 70663, for professional people and for blue collar too. You just have to want to take a few steps to be eligible to work over here. Get a twic card and a safety card to work construction as a laborer. About $20.00 an hour. There is so much work that they have built camps all over. It's like little cities for these workers. Call the unemployment office in lake Charles or go on line. They have big parking lots all over and shuttle buses to the job site.

I worked in telecommunications. So everything I did was in coding to build prompts. It was one of those jobs that made you mentally exhausted. At one point, I had gotten so use to writing in code, that it took a minute to write a complete sentence without abbreviations or in command prompt.

Oh yes... let me add that $20.00 is the starting pay. It goes up to $35.00 an hour for skilled labor in construction. $40.00 an hour if one of the plants hire you in a craft. It's sad about secretaries. They make $20.00 pluss you need all the training in word, excell, access and whatever a secretary needs to know. Engineer's make $30.00 starting pay out of college. It's gets higher as they move from job to job and learn more.

$20 isn't bad. Those positions here for secretaries is no more than $12. I've never thought about construction work, but I'll definitely consider it now. Thanks 🙂

@Ember eve gone to a cafe for lunch and wondered why double clicking on the menu didn't return your order?

Having grown up Jewish I'm more than a little bit familiar with Christian bigotry, as I don't think a single Jew has ever managed to make it to puberty without having experienced anti-semitism first. The only advantage of course has been that I'm a little immunized against the bile the religious spew. Thus when I came to recognize that religion was nothing more than a man made construct, as was god, I found myself already used to the negativity of the "faithful". It has led me to working for myself, to be my own boss, because ultimately, this way, they can't screw me over.

Sometimes the best place to be is somewhere else.

Hi Em... can you get away from that bible belt region... (?) I’ve found big cities are far more forgiving when it comes to lacking religious involvement... sounds like your background is diverse enough you’d be a good fit in most businesses, except religion...
hospitality industry, selling/marketing corporate events, and or event planning, through large chain hotels... was big business a few yeas ago... need to be in “cosmopolitan” cities, Vegas, LA, SF, Atlanta, DC... oops, maybe that’s what you were doing previously...

I live in Indianapolis, IN. Unfortunately, we may as well be considered in the bible belt. The part of the belt that's too long so you wrap it around and let the extra flop up above your pants. Working in hotels, it's an ok experience. I came back from maternity leave and couldn't get my original position back, which is why I set out to find another job in the first place. Being promoted was tossed around in front of my face but never given to me as promised. Just told I'd get bumped up to management and they'd never follow through. I think the hardest part was dealing with wealthy people who thought it was ok to walk all over people. And we have to sit back and just take it. But moving west is a goal I have set. There are more freedoms that way that we don't have here in Indy.

Wow... I hate that you had to go through all that. I hope things work out okay for you.

Wow! I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. You appear strong and determined and I'm sure you will make sure things work out. I'm glad you have found this site and are able to vent out your frustrations.
So many Christians and not much Christian love and acceptance. I hope you will find a more agreeable place to work very soon. Take care. 🙂
