I can understand them wanting to make a point but that much money couldn't be repaid over a lifetime's earnings for most people. I had read in another article that he got some community service. I think I would have instead given him a reasonable (by which I mean possible to earn) financial fee but a lot more community service, possibly in connection with the repairs due to the fire.

OM that's a ruinous amount. Ten years probation is going to ruin his social education. His offense was an idiot mistake that teens are known for doing. Poor kid, I hope he survives the probation.

Wow and some teens commit suicide just because they are gay.....well a bankruptcy should kill the award but what a way to head into adult life...
