Until people get tired of people, including children, being killed or wounded, they will not take action to reduce gun violence. Until then, I have little hope of better gun control legislation.

Let me ask you: Which one was the motive that prompted the kid in the Santa Fe HS to shoot and kill?
Unless we find what pushes a person to do what he/she did NOTHING CAN BE DONE.

Something positive can always be done. I respectfully disagree with your opinion.

@Monterey Besides no answering my question....
Something positive must be done? I guess as long as is "positive" you don't care if it will fix the problem.
The laws about checking a gun buyer are in the books...and are being applied....What is not being studied is the reason that prompts a person to snap as this kid -and others- did.

@DUCHESSA people don't need to be studied for motive. As you know, people have been killing one another since before we came out of our caves. It's what we do. I live in Texas, and the Sante Fe shooting impacted my young cousin. She wasn't shot but was highly traumatized. The young shooter, like the one in Florida, and the two at Columbine, had been bullied. Also, he used his dad's shotgun and handgun. These are good places to start doing something positive, rather than studying the matter.

@Monterey You proved my point. The weapons are not the ones that need to be "eliminated"...BUT the reasons that brought these kids to shoot are.
AS LONG AS BULLYING GOES ON THE VICTIM ...SOONER OR LATER...IS GOING TO REACT.

Don't treat the symptoms...eliminate what causes them.

BTW, the kids, specially those who bully the others, never think the victims will react...and that's the reason they keep bullying them. ...

In my 26+ years as a teacher I has seen a lot of bullying....and the pain it causes.

@DUCHESSA I understand your point. Even so, if it wasn't so easy to acquire guns the carnage might be reduced somewhat. When I was in school back in the 60s, we never dreamed of shooting one another. Maybe a fistfight, or even a knife fight, but a gunfight was inconceivable.

@DUCHESSA guns are the common denominator in these shootings. Reducing access to guns is an excellent place to start.

@Monterey +A knife fight? Again you are proving my point; a knife, a nail, a sharpened piece of glass, rat poison....all...can become weapons if the person decides to use any of them to harm others. The point is to solve what causes the desire to kill.
Sure, a gun kills more in less time but taking the guns away from decent people won't stop a person from getting one in the streets.
I remember the police / security guards in my schools canvasing the grounds to remove broken glass, rat poison, bottles of ammonia, knives

@Monterey Remove the problem and you won't need to worry about the guns.

@DUCHESSA look, I love my guns. My .357 mag. saved my ass years ago. Better options are available to prevent guns from falling into the hands of people that will use them to kill innocents. I don't think people can be fixed. We've been killing since we've been around. Limiting access to guns may be the only way to reduce the killing. I don't care about your point, whatever it is. I care about reducing gun violence. Many young black men in Chicago kill each other weekly. Their motives may be as varied as they are. Limiting access to guns is the only way I know of to reduce the killing. We will just have to disagree. Your point does nothing to reduce killing.

@Monterey See, like it or not the solution is fixing the situations that make people to go bonkers. Granted, we can't fix everybody but most certainly we can reduce these massacres by addressing the ills that cause them.

A colleague in my other country was harassed by a co-worker who was in crutches (polio); the harassment was verbal as well as physical. She reported him several times but on account of his illness the reprimands were not too strong. One day he went way over the line...he put his hand between her legs when she walked by. My colleague turned around and stabbed him on the face with her pen...the resulting wound was one cm deep. The guy never again harassed her. NO, DEAR, SHE DIDN'T NEED A KALASHNIKOV

@DUCHESSA I do like your style and wit. I suspect that I can learn much from you. If you don't mind, I'd love to continuing chatting. Thank you!

@DUCHESSA good for your friend. That brings up another issue that needs resolving, namely, abusing and sexually harassing women. I am often appalled by the behavior of men. It makes us all look bad.

@Monterey What this incident ( co-worker) brings up is ANOTHER FORM OF BULLING. The person in charge of the office should have reported this "gentleman" to the owners of the company.
NOTE: After my co-worker properly punished him...other ladies also reported having been verbally abused by him.

This happened in the 70s.

If the millions of people put to death by the likes of Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot had been well armed and organized the outcome might have been different. Even in modern times soldiers sometimes go into residential neighborhoods, order families onto the street, and gun them down, men, women and children. I think we should keep our firearms, just in case. That’s not to say that a few reasonable regulations are not in order.

In almost all recent mass murders the perpetrator was taking some sort of psychotropic medication. It’s fact—just google. IMO those drugs, if used at all, should only be used temporarily and in dire circumstances, and then only after strict safeguards are in place.

It is terrible the control the NRA and the gun mfd places on the republicans to get their way.

I think there is only one solution that would make everyone happy and it's very expensive. Armed Gaurds and Limited Access/Metal Detectors at all Schools just like courthouses.

Things that could be done:

  1. Stricter Gun Laws: Simply require Licensing to purchase a gun. We license Doctors, Drivers, and all kinds of other Certifications to perform different things especially those that are dangerous or pose risks to individuals or public health.
  2. Media, STOP SHOWING PICTURES OF THE SHOOTER, unless and only if they are fugitives on the run. Stop giving the mentally disturbed inspiration. Mentally ill thrive on attention, even and especially negative attention!!!
  3. Take a comprehensive approach: Stop insisting that ONE thing is going to solve EVERYTHING!

If there was not such a large group of Americans afraid and disenfranchized I'd be more hopeful. Sadly since 9/11 fear mongering and wealth desparity have fueled the fire that is burning down the house. The politicians feed this fear and loathing by offering NO solutions and simply blaming others, muck raking and riling up their base.
Underfunding the education system has made the problem worse. The dumbing down of America is real and rapidly spiraling downward.
The NRA exists solely to make sure the arms industry sells guns and ammo. It's spends billions promoting fear.
Until groups on either side of all the debates can find a solution to the pervasive fear little is going to change.
Individuals can ake a difference and I hope better choices are made at the mid-term elections this November.

No the NRA spends too much money on public relations.

We need to get eligible voters to go to the polls and vote by mail to get the arrogant destructive Republicans out and get people in who are ready to stand up for the people and not just rich donors and corporations.

3

Until Americans (I say Americans instead of people because this really is an American problem, nobody else in the 1st world does this shit to the extent that Americans do) get tired of always living under the threat of being shot, the carnage will continue. Why can't the US be more like Canada? You have a problem with someone? You talk it out and if that doesn't work then you just punch them in the face a couple of times until you feel better, then you apologize, offer them a hand up off of the floor and buy them a beer. If the guy's nose is broken, no big deal, a trip to the emergency room is free and they'll reset it in no time.
All of this guns, guns, guns mentality is just silly - it's much easier to fix a broken nose than it is to patch up a sucking chest wound - stop it.

4

It's frightening and hypocritical. We once had a ban on assault weapons. It got lifted. What is going on now with shootings and gun protests? There is too much money to be made. Dope and armaments are the 2 biggest money makers in the world.

4

Well, I think many of you are missing the big point here. We have a significant population of people who feel scared and rather insecure for some reason. We can sit around and call them names, ridicule them, and just drive a deeper wedge between us. Or we can try to understand the root of their problem and try to actually find a meaningful solution.

Just a thought but why not take all of the tax money that goes into prisons and spend it on mental health treatment? They could even privatize the idea so that the corporations get their cut.

We need to get the apathetic non-voters out to change the all Republican House and Senate Blue.

@TerriCity we've had Democrats control both the house and Senate. Nothing was different.

@Monterey Democrat Diane Feinstein proposed the federal assault weapons bill that was in effect from 1995 to 2004, which reduced the number of mass killing & wounded during that time. In 2004 it was up fto be extended but the republican congress did not vote to have it extended due to pressure from the NRA. There have been new assault weapons bans proposed by democrats, including another one by Diane Feinstein recently, that have not been heard on the floor because the speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, has the power to block proposals from getting a vote. Guess who has received more money from the NRA than any other politician with the possible exception of Donald dtRumpf - Republican speaker of the House Paul Ryan.

[google.com]

first thing is to get rid of that dumbass we have for an attorney general.

Its frightening and we do have gun laws - watching america at the moment is really frightening.

What about the children who have been saved by "good" people with guns? There are plenty of examples.

no there arent. thats a load of hooey.

You cannot show us these examples. I find nothing in the news. "Good" people with guns are likely to be killed by the cops. It's NRA and GOP propaganda.

@kauva Here's just one example.

@repubatheists That was in Brazil which has a murder rate that is 5 times higher than the US, if you ever visit there you would realize why there are so many shoot deaths.

@Crimson67 It sounds like you are the one screaming "NO." You haven't asked me about my personal opinions on gun control, instead you've made assumptions.

@Surfpirate Either way, an armed woman defended herself and others, and even held the criminal captive. This shows the value of being armed.

@Crimson67 Many of my posts on the topic? I hardly discuss gun control here.

@PeppermintDreads I am born and raised in Southern California, like, really!

they wouldn't have to be saved by guns, if there were no guns

@repubatheists it shows the value of being armed in a chaotic society with extreme poverty and the resulting extreme crime, combined with a police force that is largely corrupt so citizens must arm themselves in that sort of environment where civilization is always on the verge of breaking. So come to think of it you make a good point, this is a completely relevant video for Amerika under Trump. It was bad before but this taking bad to the next level, how low will it go? Anybody's guess but I'd put my money on much, much lower.

@Crimson67 Kids are dying from more than just guns but I don't see you fighting against the pharmaceutical companies that are killing more kids with pills then anything else in history! School shootings are tragic but so is drugs killing kids. This has been going on for years and even covered by the media but I do not see anyone of you trying to outlaw pills that get kids hooked on heroin! It seems that you care more about getting rid of guns then really helping kids! That is a lie, there are a lot more good people with guns then bad people with them shooting up schools! Every school shooter has been stopped by a gun! Even if it was their own, so guns obviously do save kids too!

@Crimson67, @PeppermintDreads FUNNY, Considering your picture fits the accent!

@Crimson67, @PeppermintDreads, @jacpod We would not need to have this conversation if there were no hypocritical idiots!

@Crimson67 I have 3 children and I home school to keep them away from crazy people who do crazy things and who have no guns! You do not need a gun to be crazy, but you can still do harm without them. By the way we all send our kids into a public full of police who are shooting innocent people in broad daylight! Police abuse guns also so why do you think it is ok for them to have guns? How about military, they kill innocent people too and even kids with bombs. should we take guns away from the military too? Everyone should not suffer because of a few bad apples!

@Surfpirate Crime rate has gone up significantly in countries like Sweden after the peak of mass migration in 2015. Police walked off the job saying they weren't paid enough or prepared. The IQ requirement for police was lowered in order to improve recruitment and the Swedish government has had to continue dumping more money into the police system. So what does trigger crime?

@repubatheists where did these 'migrants' come from? Oh yes, the countries that are being bombed to secure corporate power and profits. Are these people who have been uprooted from their homes poor and even desperate enough to commit crimes in order to survive? Probably so. Blowback is a factor in any war for profit, so if we don't want the 'migrants' then we have to stop making more of them by bombing the crap out of their home countries.
Hand guns are only good for one thing, killing people. You can't hunt with them and they aren't even much use for target practice but they sure make a small person feel big about themselves. As Bruce Lee famously said 'Any Fool can pull a trigger'.

@jacpod There is guns! so get over it. come back to reality!

@Surfpirate What about the rebels and in their own countries playing a role?

@IpraiseMYSELF Come to the U.K! the last time we had a school shooting was the Dunblane massacre 1996. I don't see any gunshops around ' I don't see anyone with guns 'different strokes for different folks?'

Another example - Armed citizens kill a mass shooter in Oklahoma. [edition.cnn.com]

It’s a tragic indicator of how depraved our nation, as a whole, has become.. There are many factors involved, each too profitable or coercive for those connected to relinquish. Our people have the power to elect serious change, they only lack the intelligence to envision, recognize, or maintain it…
