Swift Injustice: The Case of Tommy Robinson
The swiftness with which injustice was meted out to Tommy Robinson is stunning. No, more than that: it is terrifying.
Without having access to his own lawyer, Robinson was summarily tried and sentenced to 13 months behind bars. He was then transported to Hull Prison.
Meanwhile, the judge who sentenced Robinson also ordered British media not to report on his case. Newspapers that had already posted reports of his arrest quickly took them down. All this happened on the same day.
In Britain, rapists enjoy the right to a full and fair trial, the right to the legal representation of their choice, the right to have sufficient time to prepare their cases, and the right to go home on bail between sessions of their trial. No such rights were offered, however, to Tommy Robinson.
Not true. He was recalled to prison. He was out on licence. It happens all the time!
Not in the USA. We are a civilized country with freedom of speech, public trials, and legal rights...unlike the UK. I think that George Washington had a very good cause.
@doug6352 I think your belief in US justice is not accurate. There are a lot of political prisoners still incarcerated in Guantanamo bay who have never even been charged. Julian Assange if removed from the Ecuadorian embassy would be deported and tried secretly in the US for merely being a journalist and informing the public of the corruption and war crimes of the US. Not to mention the police officers escaping justice for the murder of black people. Tommy Robinson is a radical racist and very nasty piece of work. He should rot in prison. He was under licence and still decided to break the rules deliberately.
@doug6352 No true, in this country if you violate your parole, you go back to prison.
@Stephanie99 In the USA it is determined in open court if you violated your parole; you have the assistance of legal counsel, the press can report on the proceedings, and you can appeal. None of that applies in the fascist UK, where they have made telling the truth about the Muslim religion a crime.
8@Alanb5 People in Gitmo are prisoners of war captured on the battlefield shooting at USA forces. Was Tommy Robinson captured making war on the UK? No, just telling the truth about Islam. Police in the USA are privileged character who get away with too much against both Whites and Blacks, but it is American juries who free them from accountability, not our governments. What happens to Julian Assange if he ever escapes from the fascist UK remains to be determined. It is the UK that is holding him prisoner, you fool!
@doug6352 Doug, he isn't a reporter. He is a right wing thug. He previously worked in a factory. He has no journalism training and has no qualifications. He is an extremist with extremist views. He has NO place in modern British society. He does not speak for the vast majority of peace loving Brits. He has a long criminal history, including assault against a police officer, mortgage fraud amongst others. By filming at this extremely sensitive trial, he perverted the course of justice and put very very young vulnerable witnesses at risk. He is a stupid man. Stop listing to Alex Jones and find some reliable news source. I suggest The Guardian.
@doug6352 actually he has been arrested in the past for beating his girl friend up in the street and then assaulting a police officer who intervened. He intimidates witnesses and has broken public disorder laws as well as racist laws on many occasions. I have no idea why you would defend this criminal.
@doug6352 I'm not a defender of my countries government. Mr Robinson has every right to speak about his concerns peacefully. His problem is he is a violent individual, a right wing bully and thug. You make out he's some kind of hero. Guantanamo is mainly full of prisoners who have not been charged for any offence and most are civilians picked up off the streets in Iraq with no evidence. White US police seem to be institutionally racist and continuously are let off with no charges after shooting black civilians. In Assanges case the UK right wing govt is despicable in its treatment of him. I totally agree.
@doug6352 I am not going to argue any further as you are obviously a racist. You need to look up the definition of fascism and authoritarianism and oligarchy. Britain isn't perfect and I have major criticism of government policies. The UK government was voted in with a small majority by democratic means so I don't understand what you mean by fascist. You need to educate yourself. The Germans used racism to eradicate the Jews and other minorities, the Isrealis currently have an apartheid state and see the Palestinians as less than human, History is filled with racist scapegoats and many holocausts. Ultimately that's where all racism and scapegoating leads. Read some history, especially imperialism and colonialism by most major nations, the Khmer Rouge, Stalinism, the Hootis and Tootsis. etc etc etc etc. You need to read Chomsky, Chris Hedges, George Orwell, Christopher Hutchins, Norman finkelstein, Daniel Ellsberg, Jeremy Cahill. If you have a problem with joined up words there's lots of info on YouTube.
