A good number of social studies have shown a correlation between low levels of scientific literacy and religiosity. One of these studies, in 2011, stated that "Religion plays a sizeable role in the low levels of scientific literacy found in the United States, and the negative impact of religious factors is more substantial than gender, race, or income.". That's the tragedy of our times: in an unprecedented era of scientific and technological triumphs, the ignorance about scientific facts, as well as the outright rejection of many of them by religious people is a factor of backwardness and has a strong political influence in democracies.
