Stygmata - I have always had questions pertaining to the phenomenon known as the Stygmata. Whenever this phenomenon supposedly occurs, besides bleeding from the eyes, the Stygmatee also experiences bleeding from the palms of the hands. This is patently an incorrect representation of how someone is attached to a cross during crucifiction. If one is impaled through the palms, immediately upon raising the cross, the flesh would tear through and not be able to support the body's weight. Historical accounts of the time suggest that the nailing occurred immediately behind the wrist between the radius and ulna bones. The connective tissues leading to the wrist could have support the body's weight. Just saying, why when the study of anatomy goes way back to the Romans with Galen, did the Christian relihion get this do wrong?

It's easy to get stigmata with a hidden razor blade

I appreciate hearing another is fascinated by Stygmata. I have seen on History Channel that there is virtually no archealogical evidence that anybody was ever crucified, except for one heel bone that was found with a nail in it. Also, that even without nails, a person could not hang on the position for more that 1-2 hours before suffocating.

Weirdly, I used to have a reoccuring dream that I was a stigmatic until about the age of 14 yrs. Its weird because thats a freaky thing for a young kid to dream about but also because I was broadly brought up in CofE (although my family are not religious)...as in low Church anglican. So where the hell my weird kid little mind got that idea from I'll never know. My Grandpa said he always thought I was the second coming but he did have a rather ridiculously high opinion of me 😉

I think those who "receive" the stigmata are basically uneducated and because it must be a psycho-somatic disorder the bleeding occurs where they think it "should" be.

Interesting point. I used to think this to. Some while back I watched a documentary that explored this. It suggested that there is in fact a large nerve bundle that is nestled in the palm of our hands - piercing this with a large nail would cause excruciating agony for the victim. As for supporting the weight on the cross there is nothing to say that the victim could not have been supported by tying a cloth or rope around their lower arms to help to hold them in place.
