Cutting the cord on “insociable” media. I have decided that Facebook is horrible to my mind and spirit. I don’t think we were meant to know every god damn thought other people have, lol. So, bye! That and AM talk radio, also.

Aren’t we all tempted… What pisses me about fb is how few ‘friends’ have the guts to support ‘in an open forum’ the stuff they eagerly agree with me in private.. I stand up, and they back down. And how reams of religious propaganda can flow from an elementary school teacher’s fb page … but I get the silent treatment for ‘liking’ a post from American Atheist.

Actually, the only thing fb’s become useful for me is helping remember the handful of local events I might attend ..and our ‘local town group’s’ recommendations on car mechanics and restaurants...

As for AM radio … it’s usefulness (to those seeking information - not propaganda) died with the Fairness Doctrine.. Thanks Ronnie ~

I've got my FB set to block certain content, to NOT follow certain "friends", and TO follow certain comedians. The result is a surprisingly light hearted experience. Without the blocks and comedy, I likely would have pulled the plug on it. So much negativity, religion, and politics have GOT to be toxic!

Me too! I set the tone and get rid of the rest.

I have facebook amazing for my education. I follow great pages like Chemistry (Compound Interest), Geology page, Street Epistemology, Phylogeny Explorer Project. (PEP), Here is the Evolution, Diagnostic Nutrition, Scientific American, Critical Thinker Academy etc etc etc!

My news feed is loaded with peer review studies, data, new science info, history, math and many other informative material that is both educational and interesting. Plus interactive. I study for hours everyday. I love it AND IT IS FREE

If you need something to replace AM radio, look into podcasts. They're great and you can always find a topic you like. It's like radio on demand and they're always playing your favorite show.

I've never been on Facebook, and I do not see why I would want to know everything about everyone.

HEAR HEAR! I did that same thing 8 years ago. My wife ask me one day....who are all those women? Ahhh.... friends? I said. She said really? I said well ok.... I get it! Thats when it stopped and never went back....lol.

I spend 50% less time on Facebook since arriving here.

It turns out giving everyone a public (encapsulated) voice isn't necessarily healthy for the mind. It amazes me still the lengths we go to in order to illustrate the lives we want others to believe we live. Never has it been easier for the masses to indulge in graphic narcissism.

On the other hand, it's nice to be able to keep up with far away friends and family.

Brilliantly put, conclusion included ~

If you lean to the left politically or environmentally, it is very difficult to consume much media including facebook. A lot of my family members are still very conservative. I don't want to block them because of the family stuff they share, but I seriously have to limit my exposure.

I am still on facebook (somewhat). I have and do comment on questionable comments and links from others and have been unfriended numerous times. I also hear from people connected to certain groups like our local Friends of the San Juans. However, one can choose who/what appears and most of my 'friends' are FFRF, Engenderhealth, Big History, our local Historical Society (for which I am a trustee) and numerous science groups like Union of Concerned Scientists (Agnostic.com also shows up on my fb page).

@Chrisbiologist, you don't have to block them. Unfollow. You can still have the benefit of seeing their stuff when and if you want by going directly to their page but, it won't show up on your feed. I've done that with a few of my family that were driving me nuts, pssstt don't tell them, cause I haven't. LOL

@BeeHappy I am a facebook novice and don't know how that works but will try it. I don't usually unfriend people, I wait for them to do that to me (it shows they have given up). But I have done it to a good friend because she is a photographer and half my site was full of her pictures (now that I remember - I said something and she unfriended me).
