Atheism is what I don't believe. Secular Humanism is what I believe in. There is no god. We're better off if we care about each other.[americanhumanist.org]
Not sure what "not believing in atheism" means. Atheism "is". I am an atheist. I lack belief in the existence of god. I am also a humanist, just as many religious people are.
Atheism is the description of what I do not believe - in god. But that belief that there is no god says nothing about what I DO think. I believe we should trust science and work for a "better society." Whatever that means.
thankyou for your response I was getting tangled up in all of that - I would say that I am godless and always have been -end of-
Is one not required to be an atheist prior to joining the American Humanist Association?
Not to my knowledge. For me, it was like reading my own mind when I read the Humanist Manifesto 3. So, I've been an atheist for a long time. I've known I was a humanist for a shorter period of time.
Prove to me there's no god.
Prove to me there is no Santa Claus. I can't prove a negative, nonetheless I believe in that negative. There is no evidence of any sentient being controlling things from on high or anywhere else.
I'm still waiting...
I suggest that it is far better to believe in nothing beyond transient mundane navigational beliefs and question everything, or at least remain skeptical. I accept the posits of secular humanism, but I don't believe in it any more than I believe in science. Holding a belief in anything limits one's flexibility and makes one resistant to other points of view that differ from what is believed.
Seems like it would be very cumbersome to not believe in anything. You'd be deciding everything on a moment by moment basis.
@schwinnrider -- That's the point about transient mundane navigational beliefs. Those are constructive tools that we all use to avoid overload. Shall I explain, or do you know what I'm getting at?
I like the term Freethinker myself. I am a secular humanist aswell. Pick a term, any label you want.
