Here is an example of religion run amuck ... A boy in Alabama had a bad accident, the doctors didn't give him much of a chance to survive his injuries. His body fought back, he had good doctors and family support, he beat the injury and recovered. When asked about it he didn't thank the doctors, he said he was saved by God! Oh, I see, God chose him over the many others. Why didn't God save the thousands killed on 9-11, or the millions burned in ovens, or the person killed in an auto accident? I rest my case
Your argument makes sense only if you think we are only our bodies. If “God” is a unified field of consciousness, and our true essence lies in that field, it little matters what becomes of bodies. They are only robots, and they are being made faster than they are dying.
Think of how good and special it feels to believe that God reached out and saved you personally.
In another circumstance the best doctors in the world, giving it their best effort, might not have been able to save him. As you say, it was a combination of factors, including the boy's resilience, family support, and countless other unidentifiable influences. It is this total collection of circumstances, and influences that is symbolized by the concept of "God". Doctors alone are not almighty, but the totality of reality is. If we didn't already have a simple three letter word to represent that concept we would need to make one up because yelling "oh totality of reality" over and over in the bedroom would just be cumbersome.
