It feels like a remake of 'the god of the gaps', a convenient answer for inconvenient questions. But, since we know that computation and simulation both exist, it's definitely more likely than the 6+1 day creation!

If we were, would it make any difference as the simulation is obviously completely realistic to us.

From what I have heard and seen of it, it sounds like an attempt to make a new religion. Who or whatever created the simulation must be to us, God.
