Here in Iowa they are voting to put the Bible in our schools as a class. Supposedly it is as a work of influential literature on our society but I for one am not buying it. In my minds eye it is a thinly veiled attempt to recruit kids into Christianity. You know, like they did in Texas…..

This is 100% proof of total illiterate incompetence by the Iowa Senate and General Assembly. ...not a single one of those 152 criminal theocrats under the golden dome has EVER READ THE FILTHY GENOCIDAL PORNOGRAPHIC MISOGYNISTIC ANTI-SCIENCE bibles nor have the Catholics read their Douay Altar bibles. ...Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in 1890's: " we shall have gawdless schools" throwing out of court Lutherans who wanted their bibles in schools sued by Catholics objecting to the Norwegian and Swede farmers running the local schools

I don't have a problem as long as it is taught as historical fiction. Reading the bible is more common among atheists than believers.

Yes, it is because we read the Bible that we are all Atheists

1

its a pile of shit and your right. there will be no devil worship classes and if there's one then there is the other. what happened to freedom of choice?

Pity, but I would like a bit more context on this story before getting worked up about it.

Is the book simply there in the library or is it in the classroom featured?

According to the news it will be an actual class of its own

@misstuffy Kevin & Molly Cooney KCCI or that insane WHO radio 1040 liars. ? When Atheist Senator John Ely was alive these religious criminal theocrats were nipped in the bud on procedure motions objecting to legal form of a bill before introduced onto the floor

@misstuffy a pity.

First, nice cat, second, they will stop at nothing to indoctrinate children because children are naïve; perfect targets for bullshit, who have had practice with Santa and are now ready for god to take a turn.

I think that is exactly why they are doing this. They say the are not planning to teach the religious aspect but I do not trust that.

@misstuffy it’s obvious, but you know how excuses work.

@Funandfondles quite obvious, they think we are all stupid and blind

@misstuffy unfortunately many are, or at least look the other way.

It's not even "thinly veiled".

An understanding of the bible, particularly the King James, vastly improves your chances of understanding Western literature. Tolkien was a Catholic mystic, if you don't have any bible knowledge his work is diminished for you. Joyce is even more utterly impenetrable if you don't know biblical work. Shakespeare helped write the King James, a lot of his plays are better understood if you get his mindset. Flaubert, Moliere, Tolstoy, Didion, Atwood, the list goes on. If you don't understand biblical references and the poetry and songs inspired by them you miss a significant link in the continuity of western culture. That said, the same is true of classical literature, yet I do not see any bills to encourage the teaching of Latin or Classical Greek.

@MrLizard So when do people learn this part of our cultural history? I would think teaching it as literature, with the same critical thinking applied as we do to other fiction, is a valid approach.

I believe the teaching of those two languages is essential as so many of our other languages have these as their root and Latin is used in so many of the sciences

@misstuffy And in Philosophy, and Art, and English comprehension. In fact without them the Renaissance could not have occurred.

@RobAnybody I for one do not believe they are planning to teach it in a nonreligious way.

@misstuffy I suspect both you and MrLizard are correct. I would like to see it taught as I suggest because it both lets the bible bashers have their time in the sun whilst subverting their purpose to the betterment of society.

Then, all other sacred scripture must be taught...!!

1

You are correct..

You can't deny it is a work of influential literature. Right or wrong it has influenced a lot of people for a long time. It can't be studied that way because one of it's underlying themes is to go forth and spread the word. I think you are right.

I once joined a group that was to help people getting out of prison to acclimate back into society. It was made up of mostly Evangelicals, and as the group proceeded with meetings, the people with the most say, kept telling the rest of us that...it was a "gold mine' for people just waiting to be delivered to the 'Lord'...my friends and I had to drop out,...they are "overtaking', in their approach!

@Freedompath AA is the same way. I do like the serenity prayer though.

@MikeFlora I have some experience...agreed!

Thank you

As long as they include the study of

Buddhist Sacred Texts: The Sutras.
Hindu Sacred Texts: The Vedas.
Islamic Sacred Texts: The Quran and Hadith.
Jewish Sacred Texts: The Tanach, Mishnah, Talmud and Midrash.\

as well, I'd be ok with it.

Lets not stop there, we have a lot of other religions to cover, the Gods of the Roman, Greek and Egyptian empires and then in the AMericas all those native American and lets take a look at Asia, the CHinese and Japanese and Koreans also had their Gods. I would be more for it if they taught comparative religions and the evolution of religion, showing where the Boble stole its stories from other cultures and how it usurped other Holidays for their own purpose.

3

Hmm. There are arguments on both side. The Bible contains a lot of material that one should know if they wish to consider themselves educated in our culture. It also contains a lot of material for indoctrination. It all depends on how the course are taught. A neutral religious studies course would be acceptable in my opinion but not anything that had to do with proselytizing.

Do you actually think the course will be taught as culture? Please, is poor indoctrination.

I would like to see the course study for this class before they offer it

@DUCHESSA No I do not, I believe it is a poorly veiled plan

1

If they put it in as a "work of literature" to a suitably aged audience does this mean they expect a critique handed back. That one could backfire hilariously the first time someone rips it to shreds for internal inconsistency and treats it like any other work of fiction.

Hi Misstuffy this is a result of having Trump and Pence in power giving the religious right to trample over the seperation of religion and state.

I agree with you, they would never have considered such a bill before Trump/Pence cane to power but I have noticed a lot of new legislation that makes no sense in my own state lately

1

Included as a literary piece, as a source bject for literature, sure. As a sole class, no.

2

Religions should be taught in school, but no religion should ever be taught in schools by a follower as schools are there in an attempt to enlighten.

THE ONLY THING that should be taught about religion is its ompact on mankind since ever.

@DUCHESSA basically that is what they say they are going to teach. I doubt they will point out that part of that impact is 99.9% of the prisoner population in our country has a religious affiliation

0

Well, they have to put the bibles somewhere since they're not putting them in hotels (at least the ones I've been in).

They are still in the hotels Ive been in but Im in the midwest, very strong Bible thumper territory

2

Gotta watch 'um, they bees sneaky that way.
