Anyway...I don't understand when it became acceptable for governments to subsidise private schools. I mean, that's public monies.

In the last year, here in Australia, there's also been a public outcry against subsidies to private schools - religious or otherwise. But luckily for us, public schools here are still quite good - and have the same or a better standing (in the real world) than private schools.
