QUESTION Why did the secular ambitions of the early United States fail? | Aeon Essays

Quite simply, a secular society required the founding of public schools and libraries, served by qualified teachers. Scientific and philosophical education was necessary to replace the moral influence, social programs and historical teachings of the churches. In the 1785–86 session of the Virginia Assembly, Jefferson proposed three bills intended to establish institutions to secularize Virginia society. The bills proposed to create a non-religious school system, organized by county, and providing free education through the elementary grades; to sever the College of William and Mary’s church ties, and make it a republican college; and to establish a public library system built around science, philosophy and civics. An ally of Jefferson’s described the ambition of the measures. They ‘propose a simple and beautiful scheme, whereby science… would have been “carried to every man’s door”.’

there was a reason that the Bible was the only book slave-owners allowed to circulate freely on plantations

I think it was a move toward Christianity after WWII to unify the country against communism. At the time communists were largely viewed as godless so we adopted the motto in God we trust and added under God to the pledge of allegiance.

Totally agree...i was in 4th grade when they added that phrase to the Pledge and you could feel the disapproval of the adults...a line had been crossed! Thanks, Joe McCarthy & Billy Graham!

I think this is pretty accurate

Religion..the bane of freedom.

Another book besides the Bible found in most 19th century American and British homes was Anna Sewell's Black Beauty.

Before the book, domestic animals like horses were routinely worked to death, seldom named, disposable. Cruel and ignorant people could own and work these animals with no consequences. Kind of how factory farm animals are treated and thought about today.

By creating a horse character that tells its side of the story, Anna Sewell created a new idea..that animals like horses have feelings and rights also, and can be treated like beloved pets. Laws began to be passed to protect them as public sentiment changed.

Amazes me that so may Americans demand that we be identified as a Christian nation and decorate our country with Judeo-Christian artifacts, yet deplore societies that require that same behavior of the dominant religions of their societies. Yet so many early immigrants came to this land to escape from religious oppression. To boot, the vast majority of self-proclaimed "Christians: reject the teachings of that great guy whom people started worshiping ad a god!
