What is the essence of 'modernity' ?

"At the heart of the notion of modernity was the conviction that the contemporary is intrinsically superior to the past because we have progressed from there to here. The modern way of thinking and acting is not simply an alternative way to that of antiquity; it marks a movement of improvement.

"What is central here is the conviction that the world – and time and change – is something to be mastered and controlled. Furthermore, the world is to be mastered and controlled not for its own sake, but in order that we may progress. Again, this progress is to be pursued not for its own sake, but so that human beings may produce ‘a more hospitable world for themselves’.

"The world is to be mastered and controlled so that it may serve the needs of human beings. The human subject thus becomes the ‘master’ and the world itself becomes the ‘slave’, and the human subject exercises this mastery through the discipline of the application of reason and science.

"When the human subject masters reality by means of reason and/or science, the self comes to understand itself as
existing in a fundamentally nominative mode. That is to say, the self becomes the subject that applies the disciplines of reason and science to the world, which is thereby conceived to be the object of that activity. This was in marked contrast to the epistemological model that prevailed in medieval theology. There, human beings understood themselves as existing in an accusative mode. They, and the wider reality of which they were a part, were created by God and were therefore, in a sense, objects of God’s creative activity. The only true ‘subject’, therefore, was God, the creator and ‘author’ of all known reality."

Modernity is too often the refuge of mediocrity!

If we do not campaign to conquer the universe, the universe will inevitably conquer us, thus returning to a state of lifeless indifference.

I reject the argument completely.
The pproposition is that Humans should master the world through reason and science to 'produce a more hospitable world for themselves .... so that it may serve the needs of human beings'
I would suggest that seeking to live as part of the natural world, in a manner that allows all species to thrive should be the prime directive of humanity ... humans should act as conservators, not masters

Nothing is modern for more than a very brief time span....everything is outmoded and superseded, almost as soon as it happens. Thoughts and ideas can prevail for much longer than material things, but they are not immune to becoming obsolete when challenged by scientific facts and our more advanced knowledge of how the universe works. What is not reasonable is to believe that all new thinking is better and discard old philosophies just because they are old. The belief that God created and controls everything persists in people’s minds even when no evidence exists to substantiate it and is a contradiction to the idea of modernity. Since the great Enlightenment in the 18th century we progressed steadily in what was considered to be the “modernity” era until the early 20th century when we entered the “post modern” age. I believe we have now entered a very unstable period in our history when there are alarming signs of regression in our development. I don’t know how historians will deal with this time we are now living through, or what they will call it, but I hope it’s only a temporary aberration and that we can recover our collective reason, and soon.
