Are nursing homes inherently flawed (more Covid19 coronavirus)

[kiro7.com]

Lots of people have debilitating diseases like dementia. Lots of kids need help caring for their parents, if the older person is lucky enough to even have anyone who cares. Decades of lawsuits and regulatory changes have made even the basic nursing homes decent, and with money, they can be pretty nice.

But then theres this... a facility in the Seattle area, 50+ people with symtpoms, one death and one person hospitalized. And this only came to light today. Did the facility reach out to the dept of health? Did medicaid regs prevent the facility from transporting sick people with urgent needs, until they crashed? Did lack of reimbursement for telehealth exacerbate this? Who brought the disease into the facility? A worker who couldnt afford to stay home when they were sick?

Im guessing a little bit of public healh history is happening here.

If Coronavirus gets into any nursing homes the residents will drop like flies...

4 deaths so far today

These are elderly folks who have health problems to start with. Then you have a large population crammed into a small building with central air. What could be worse?

Supposedly that's why theres a high proportion of medical staff, and residents (or our taxes) pay such high rent. Each of these people is easily paying 5-6k per month for room and board. IIRC the article said theres about 180 people on staff (that's admins to cooks to nurses to aides to cleaning staff...) and about 108 residents.

Life seems inherently flawed to me. People either live to long or die too young.

But, hey, it's got some good upsides.
