Going to war for birth control is one thing, but requiring that employers provide “free” birth control through insurance is something else entirely.

Insurance should be only to keep a person from financial ruin in the case of a disaster. A small recurring expense like birth control should ALWAYS be paid out of pocket. Running such an expense through an insurance company might feel like free gratis but it is not, and in fact the cost is multiplied.

Insurance is the very reason for the mess we are in with our healthcare system. Suppliers rush in to capture that pool of insurance money, raising their fees to exorbitant levels, while the public has no incentive to shop for the best price. Besides that, insurance companies have capital costs and overhead, and they have to make a profit. There is no free lunch.

There is no basis for requiring employers to provide anything except for what is specified by contract. There is no basis for requiring anyone at all to carry insurance of any type. Our health care system needs drastic change, but tweaking insurance is not going to fix anything, just make it worse.

I know that’s not the issue before the court.

So, if I understand you, your blood pressure medication should be out of pocket, not matter what it costs? The cost should not be covered by your employer sponsored health insurance? Which also means if you ever want Viagra or any of that genre of medication it would be out of pocket. Insurance companies do make profits, obscene profits. Most insurance company CEOs are making high six figure if not 7 figure incomes. I don't ever want my employer making health care decisions for me. If I need oral contraceptives to fight acne or uterine fibroids, I don't want to have to discuss that with HR. I want my health insurance to cover my prescriptions. Have you priced any of these drugs? I talked to a mom who had BCBS, they gave her hell about paying for CHEMO for her child. She had a $50,000+ bill. Why did I talk to this mom, I work in the billing office of a hospital. Insurance companies are totally SHIT.

@HippieChick58 Apparently we should have to pay for all medications out of pocket even if we are paying for insurance that is supposed to also pay for it. I can read and I know the difference.
