Memories of Catholic upbringing: we went to a small parochial school, adjacent to the rectory, across the street from the convent and church. This was all located in a very lower class French ethnic neighborhood. One day at recess, one of the 3 doors in the huge garage the priests owed opened. Slowly, a late model Cadillac emerged with the monseigneur at the helm. Behind where the car was stood a very large powerboat. Adjacent were two other late model cars....all the kids in our group were wowed at the sight ( first time we saw inside the garage).... I vividly remember thinking that I no longer understood the “vow of poverty”
Religion is a very successful business
Yes BUT ONLY for the Tithe Collectors, aka Priests, Ministers, etc, etc.
Unfortunately.
Priests do not take a vow of poverty.
The Roman Catholics did, at least back then,,...this was in the sixties
@Canndue NO they didn't, Nuns did, not priests.
The vow of poverty is to keep their congregation poor by requiring them to donate 10% or more of their income to the church, regardless of how little they actually earn . As my Dad used to say about casinos, they didn't put up all those tall fancy buildings because they were giving all their money away.
