Sitting on billions, Catholic dioceses amassed taxpayer aid
When the coronavirus forced churches to close their doors and give up Sunday collections, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte turned to the federal government’s signature small business relief program for more than $8 million.
The diocese’s headquarters, churches and schools landed the help even though they had roughly $100 million of their own cash and short-term investments available last spring, financial records show. When the cash catastrophe church leaders feared didn’t materialize, those assets topped $110 million by the summer.

It really bugs me when people give so much of their hard earned to churches because they "help the poor." Some of them are poor. They can help the poor, themselves, by not paying tithes. They already pay taxes that help the poor. They already pay insurance to help with catastrophes. If they want to help other poor people, there are so many ways to do now that, crowdfunding, etc. wherein the goes directly to the people who need it. While there are many charitable religious organizations, only a small % of the they are given goes to that. The rest goes to building ornate houses of worship, fancy uniforms, defending lawsuits, etc. The churches give to the poor is probably a lot less than corporation in taxes which also help the poor, but it's the corporations that are the big, evil bad guys, right? The Catholic Church is one of the most corrupt corporations on the planet, and they go unchecked.
