To Pbuck0145 and racocn8 and others of like mind: You call yourselves conservatives. There are also many things I advcocate conserving. I challenge you to state clearly , in detail and with clarify, exactly what things you favor conserving. Include both tangible and intangible things of importance to you. If you do so, I will do exactly the same.

But, I am also setting ground-rules for our dialogue: (1) no name-calling. insults, or false labeling, (1) no attempts to cloud the issue by throwing in extraneous issues, (3) willingness to respond directly to any relevant question I ask.

I challenge you to engage in this dialogue, letting everyone else see it and join in, if they also follow the rules and have something to contribute. We will let the chips fall where they may, and let others decide whom they think has the perspective of greatest value.
Do you have the courage and intellectual honesty to do it? If so, let's go at it!!!

I too would confer a very generous self-assessment on the putative philosophical background to my opinions.

It's only when I deign to drivel about specific policies that dialectic analysis can either deify or damn my contentions.

I do not call myself a conservative. The regressive left label me as "right-wing", thereby side-stepping the requirement to deal with legitimate liberal issues. Conservatism has many correct and admirable principles, but I am a classical liberal, not a conservative. Dave Rubin expressed it succinctly in an animated video.

I support socially responsible capitalism, as practiced in the Nordic nations, Switzerland and somewhat in Israel. I support the meritocracy. I reject corporatism, crony capitalism, and religious dogma, especially Islam.

I support many of the social initiatives favored by leftists, but reject Marxism/Socialism/Communism and group identity.

I support Humanism and the healing and preservation of the only habitat wherein humanity will ever be able to survive and thrive.

I promote individual rights and responsibility and reject collectivism.

Why go this far back in trying to define a classic liberal? I call myself a Progressive but I could be a classic liberal. My politics are like Bernie Sanders and AOC.

I must interject that lumping @racocn8 in with Pb is pretty harsh! . IMO not even on the same planet! (Mostly)

(I haven't called myself conservative.) I am in favor of conserving biodiversity by reducing Humanity's impact. I favor conserving those laws that were enacted with good faith i.e. income tax yes, but not cannabis criminalization. While I favor conserving the current constitutional government, that is only out of practicality. I do not favor the Electoral College, Citizens United, excessive govt secrecy, gerrymandering, unregulated capitalism. I claim that science and the technology derived provide our improved standard of living, and the programs fostering those should have priority. Grossly unequal wealth and income should be checked via regulation. I don't believe the current system can effectively function going forward, and much greater effort needs to be expended to improve mental health and to assess people's problems, and limiting the psychotics from safety sensitive positions, i.e. govt, military, law enforcement. Similarly, corruption poisons our systems, and much more should be done to ensure that only people who are sincerely committed to the public good be allowed to serve.

@Pbuck0145 has claimed to be a Classical Liberal. From Wikipedia comes this: "Classical Liberals asserted that rights are of a negative nature and therefore stipulate that other individuals and governments are to refrain from interfering with the free market, opposing social liberals who assert that individuals have positive rights, such as the right to vote, the right to an education, the right to health care, and the right to a living wage. For society to guarantee positive rights, it requires taxation over and above the minimum needed to enforce negative rights."

I do favor those issues that Classical Liberals oppose, so that makes me a Social Liberal. I do favor voting, education, health care and a living wage. Also, I favor taxation and eminent domain to level the playing field which currently favors the wealthy and corporations to an extreme. That includes breaking up and/or nationalizing (broken up and sold off) corporate monopolies, ideally on a large scale.

IWe agree more than I thought. I believe that we should haave income taxes, but believe that such taxes should be more progressive.I agree in the pursuit of constituional democracy and in well-regulated capitalism. I also degree with we need regulations to provent people for exploiting he using others. I think that if we stayed away from communicating with each other in aggressive terms, we would find that we agree on even more.

I long ago gave up engaging with Pbuck0145 for exactly the reasons that you describe.
