I would call myself an independent progressive with democratic leanings if I were to attempt a label. I am old enough to understand and realize that mankind is imperfect and greed either for cash or power will always be with us and that might not be an entirely bad thing. Its the transparency and the watchdogs among us that are both the antidote and the rational.
Speaking as a Canadian, I doubt that any of the social democratic countries in the western world would recognize any Americans as Socialists. Bernie Sanders is what is called a red conservative in Canada. Fear not Americans, you are safe from becoming Socialists under your current system of government, so be happy.
Thanks for my morning chuckle! I find having three thousand miles from the next state helps.
@Angelface And you share a border with British Columbia, the most socialist province of all. Seems to me the Green Party is running things in that province and have shut down the pipeline for now at least, who knows, they might even go their own way.
@Surfpirate it wasn't too long ago that the Independence party of BC invited our Independence party to join with them in a new country. First I want to say that being an Independent, politically is not the same as being a member of an Independence political party and second, we have a lot more in common with BC than in the lower 48.
@Angelface Yes they've been talking about it for a long time but that's the Coasties for you. I lived on Vancouver Island for 5 years and there were always people willing to make the case for separating not just from Canada but from BC as well, at the very least the idea of being their own province since they are many times bigger than Prince Edward Island and it has province status.
Just how much Alaskans have in common with Vancouverites is subject to debate.
@Surfpirate There are four geothermal areas, and four distinct climate areas in Alaska's 656,425 square miles. While indeed not as large as Canada, it is more diverse thematically. Vancouver Island is part of the coastal rainforest area that is also only a small part of Alaska altho the one many people think of when the state comes to mind. I believe what both Independence agree on is less federal control and interference.
Labels are too limiting! I am a flaming liberal/ progressive who enjoys shooting pistols and believes in a swift death penalty.
Wow! I'm the passive aggressive one in the corner who while not totally agreeable, is trying to point out the most rabid Republicans and or conservative evangelistic targets...
According to the right-wingers, anybody that's a tiny bit to the left of them is a socialist that wants to destroy the country.
A Democrat who is a centrist is also known as a Libertarian. As is a Republican who is a centrist.
I think you need to review what Libertarians stand for....nowadays they are more anti big government than conservative repubs CLAIM they are.
@AnneWimsey and those that know the history know it's a lie in both cases. If you look up the people that started the libertarian party, you'd get a quick realization they'd like to hand everything over to corporations, same as republicans. Destroy as many social programs as they could get away with. Thom Hartmann gives a good rant on the history on libertarians from time to time.
@ILikeToREEE "capitalism has been the greatest source of prosperity and freedom humanity has ever witnessed."
Yea, for the wealthy class it has. Obviously you're missing where capitalism is running out of fuel to support itself. Which has lead us to global warring in an attempt to sustain itself at the cost of human suffering. Yea, lets talk about human suffering.
"Don't get me started on the immorality of social programs... or anything else that's federally funded."
Yea, lets talk about the social programs that, again, work best for the wealthy. Like bailouts for banks and corporations at tax payer expense. And subsidies at tax payer expense to multi million and billion dollar profiting companies. Which I would also add to the above as a proof capitalism can't survive on it's own without taking from those they find to be lowly. Also leading to, yea, human suffering.
I frankly do not see myself as either. I am a progressive ie promoting progress toward better conditions, new policies, ideas or methods. That is not being a socialist or a leftist. I support universal single payer health insurance because I believe it is the best for our country and that health insurance is not an entitlement but a right of every human.I believe in a progressive tax because no one ever got to where they are without the help of someone, namely the workers who seldom reap the benefits of their efforts.I believe in social security because it is a very little aide to the workers to prepare for retirement and they do not have fancy lawyers and accountants to get around tax laws to save for retirement. These do not make me a socialist rather a concerned citizen for the rest of humanity that lives in the USA.
