And unfettered logging still occurs around the world.
The byproduct of logging here is called slash. During the recent torrential rains over the East coast, the wooden refuse made its way down the waterways and on the way damaged infrastructure, plus disfigured the landscape.
A child died swimming in the forestry refuse on a Gisborne beach.
There’s a Government inquiry underway into the issue.
Typical. Are the forestry companies required to pay for the cleanups?
@FrayedBear Good question. No, unfortunately not, however the forestry companies are liable for fines. The fines clearly don’t have any effect, as they were imposed a few years ago for the same offence.
It’s a tricky situation, as the area is quite deprived and the industry generates a lot of jobs.
The solution is to process the wood on site, that’s probably what will be implemented.
Here’s the Beehive statement on the inquiry:

There will be action, as the local communities are pretty angry about the situation. To do nothing will cost an election.
@Zealandia Tasmania is similar.
I used to have a problem with attitudes where I lived. It was on the banks of a sea lake. Unfortunately run off from human poo pots over the previous 200 years had created a toxic sludge on the top 6' layer of the bottom. Instead of biting the bullet & cleaning it up they ignored it to let the mangroves valiantly struggle to correct the toxicity.
They could have dammed & drained the sea lake, cleared the sludge & treated it, then mined the sand that had washed from the hills the previous million plus years to let the water back in to create a pristine deep water lake. The profit from the sand needed by Sydney construction would have paid the local's town rates for the next ten years as well as creating a whole new industry for the next ten years!
@FrayedBear Seems pretty short sighted.
@Zealandia So short sighted \ stupid the council went bankrupt & was merged with another. Then the bunfights really started.
The same council refused to repair a road bridge over a ravine. The corrugated iron holding the road up was known to be rusted out. It collapsed killing a familly of 4. No survivors. No compensation paid. No one sent to gaol.
@FrayedBear That’s not very good.
@Zealandia Strylia - she'll be right!
@FrayedBear The same attitude here sometimes.
Here’s a good example. Chocolate milk is actually rated as more healthy than regular milk. No worries mate!
@FrayedBear By the way, kiwi land has got in on the deportation of crims bandwagon, aka 501s, and is considering shipping a female Comanchero gang member to Oz…
@Zealandia fasten up there's an Arbuckle involved. No wonder fat is taboo!
For the adverage house, plant five trees around your house and you have all the refreshing oxygen one needs. For my tiny house all is require is risebed microgreens inside and out for more than enough oxygen. It cooler because of oxygen and humidity.
It is no surprise that trees cool the atmosphere and draw up ground water.
Makes you wonder why we chop and bulldoze the trees and then spend a fortune cooling and irrigating the barren soil
