YOKAI—Exploring Hidden Japanese Folklore
The Himeuo is a mermaid-like yokai believed to be the predecessor of the Amabie, the illness-healing yokai that surged in popularity throughout Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yokai is a catchall Japanese word for ghosts, demons, monsters, shapeshifters, tricksters, and other kinds of supernatural beings and mysterious phenomena. Yokai interact with the human world and spark common notions of frightful things.

This Yokai/Himeuo character is like an amalgam of various western myths:
- Kassandra, female foretelling the future
- Virgen de Guadalupe, female apparition, promising protection
- Drawing image for protection from plague is like painting lamb's blood on lintel over door (Exodus 12:7)
