When one has a personal agenda of the sorts in which they feel compelled to defend and uphold under any and all circumstances even if proven to be wrong in the end, they will then vehemently resist anything that could prove their viewpoints wrong, hence they could view learning as a negative force.

Indeed, funny how that works, or maybe not so funny that much afterall. Please note my restraint on the fact that far too many fellow human beings out there have a problem with reading itself, let alone the ability or will to learn new things. Too many hate reading anything that might take longer than two or so minutes of their time.
