Bring back? Last I checked they still exist...
There was a time when every state had many state supported hospitals and work farms for those who just needed help. These gave the p[eople some dignity until they started to let hospitals be run for money and the in mates were starved and beated and just lived under terrible conditions. I am sad to say the liberals started a program to give these people self respect and wound up closing these hospitals. This resulted in the many homeless on the streets and the lack of places that are not private hospitals for profit for these people to go.If you want to return deginity to these people we need to return to the work farms and state mental hospitals.
Yeah, Reagan changed the requirements for hospitalization, to where a person is only hospitalized if they are an immediate danger to themselves and/or others. Teh net result was a lot of mentally ill persons where put out on the streets and there ws a huge explosion in the homeless population, which still remains to this day.
Reagan did this as a way to pay for his tax cuts and also to pay for the huge increase in militry spending.
I have come to the conclusion that most of the more functional persons who would have been hospitalized for mental disorders before Reagan took this action now vote Republican, which is my explanation for how George W. Bush and Donald Trump got elected.
There needs to be something, to help severely mentally ill people and contain the psychotic, at least during episodes. We did clinical at one of the state hospitals here: hard to imagine most of those people functioning in society, and the ones who could function were just scary. Both hospitals closed in NC.
I don't think there are enough people, who can be trusted, to run these facilities.
There is entirely too much opportunity for abuse, and corruption.
I have no ideas for solutions, but I do know what doesn't work.
I suppose that's a start.
How about a society that actually cares for each member? Seems to me this dog eat dog world just doesn't work. If you consider the human race as a family, you wouldn't abandon an infant to fend for itself, you would care for kids even as they grew old enough to work and partially care for themselves. Now consider the guy on the street as a family member, if he needed help you would be doing what you could because you love your family, and know that the give is also to receive. Just seems to me that caring for each other on basic levels ( I know, socialism) makes sense to have a better society for all.
I firmly believe that the decision to eliminate the mental hospital has been a disgrace for the mentally ill and the general community. The old mental hospitals were a crime in the way they treated the ill. However the alternative has been worse as many of the ill now are in prisons(estimate that 36% are mentally ill) which are even worse. Many in prisons are so bad they are kept in solitary confinement. Mentally ill have no place to go. I as a parent cannot even commit a child as the laws stand unless I have the child arrested.
I am in total agreement with you Marine
