A valuable reminder, and, as @Stacey48 said, curiosity can make a difference. If you care about what the other person considers important, if you care about the relationship, staying curious may keep you away from aggressively pushing positions (your preferred solutions) with words which may damage the relationship. The tipping point always has to do with how much we value a relationship, and how well we manage our emotions (our emotional competence). My not-for-profit website has many techniques to help.
