So, my 4 year old son is on the spectrum. And we have a new intern at work who I am working closely with. While I would not want to presume anything, he certainly seems to be on the spectrum. So of course I feel a little protective of him, but everyone at my work is very nice. The thing is, I'm relatively open about my son on the spectrum (I have 3 sons) at work, especially since I had to petition my HR to get his therapy covered. But I haven't mentioned him being autistic around the intern. It just feels weird, like I don't want him to feel like I'm bringing it up because of him. I've decided to only bring it up where it normally would and not assume anything about him, but now I am analyzing when it would normally occur!
Also, I don't want to give the appearance that I consider it something to feel sorry about - I don't. It's just part of who my son is, although it does require a lot more patience and energy than my others. And as a parent I think we all have stories about how our kids made us late or pitched a fit in public.
I like what ipdg77 said. I'd like to add that I think you'll know when and what to say, when the opportunity presents itself, or not say anything at all. It sounds like you already have good instincts, and will go in the right direction.
Sounds to me as if you're a considerate and measured person with the right frame of mind. A lot of people can have or show autistic traits so you respond to what's presented not the label. From what I have found, people on the autistic spectrum have the same feelings and emotions as NTs but don't show them, I'm sure your support is appreciated if not acknowledged.

Posted by altschmerzI was diagnosed with autism by a psychologist after a day of testing, but my current therapist keeps saying she doesn't think I have it (or I'm a "little bit" autistic).
