I'm new to the group, and I don't know if I'm autistic or where I land on the spectrum of autism. All I know is that the way I view the world, the things I think about, the feelings I feel, the art I create, the songs that move me aren't the way other people see it or feel it or understand it. I sometimes feel alone in my mind like an alien visitor in a strange world. I'm different than my peers, and I often feel rejected or misunderstood. I feel alone, yet I'm not lonely, I'm social, but I can do it on my own. I can see the pain in others around me, and I feel helpless because my solutions are of a mind that can be too dissimilar to theirs. I'm weird, and I'm okay with that because I have to be. Does anyone here identify with any of this?

Hi P, there are quite a few tests on YouTube that you can take to see if you're ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or not. Of course, this method is just for curiosity. If you need a professional diagnosis, it's best to consult a psychiatrist who specialises in ASD.

I appreciate that. I do not need to have a test done. If I decide, later it's important I might consider it.

First, welcome to the group; I'm also fairly new. Second, I can relate to some of what you described, but not all. Third, I read this great book on Asperger's Syndrome (which I'm guessing has been posted here before), which helped me to identify many characteristics of that and Autism. It might help you too. Here's a link to it for sale on Amazon (they also have used copies which are cheaper). Hope it helps.

Welcome, and as to where you are on the autistic spectrum. There are very basically three main parts to the spectrum. Autistic, high functioning autistic, and Asperger’s.
In the bigger picture, we are all part of the Autistic Spectrum Condition, and something very important to remember. When you have met one person with autism, you have met one person with autism. That means we are all individuals. The very fact that you’ve managed to type a question, must now you into either high functioning autism, or Asperger’s syndrome.
Wherever you are in the spectrum try to have fun and enjoy it. Everyone I support through my work are wonderful human beings, even if we have to grade them as not being neuro typical.

With the last upgrade 3 years ago from DSM IV to DSMV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), the term Asperger's Syndrome was discarded and all people anywhere on the spectrum became known as having ASD...... Autism Spectrum Disorder. The previous distinction between High Functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome was only the delay in speech development (sometimes by a couple of years) for young children with High Functioning Autism. Now it's necessary to be descriptive in order to explain where someone is on the spectrum.

I'm trying to get a copy of DSM V. Too many Chinese knock offs! When at training recently, I was quite surprised that in private sector, we have to use non DSM terms. When we were the National Autistic Society, we didn't 'type' Autism. When NAS cut back support to London and we were transferred to a private company, we had to adapt to a lower level of expertise.

Welcome aboard 🙂 I'm sure a lot of people will be able to identify with what you say 🙂
