In the late 70s, I was done with rock of the time (started to take itself way too serious). Disco was fun but nothing more and country seemed like it might win the airwaves.
And then I discovered New Wave. Arising from the Punk music scene in the UK, New Wave artists used the Punk energy to express their unhappiness with the current state and direction of rock music
New Wave had some acceptance in the US it's true base was the UK, NZ, Australia and Canada. My first exposure was Martha & the Muffins (Can) and Human League (UK) but my fav was Canada's own Boys Brigade with The Passion of Love. If you watch it, note it has all the staples of the early years of music videos - still makes me smile
