When trump says something. All of a sudden everyone wants to move to canada. I am one of those people who say it all the time, but lately I've been thinking about making a conscious move. Can anyone tell me about what Canada is really like. I look at TV but It ofcourse doesn't show an all inclusive representation of the many parts of Canada.

Superficially, Canada and the USA seem very similar. In reality, the two countries are as different as Greece is different from Finland. Canada is constitutional monarchy and social democratic. The most left-leaning US Democrats would overlap slightly with the most right wing Conservatives in Canada. We consider US Republicans to be beings from another galaxy. This is a much more egalitarian society. Our rich are not very rich and our poor are not very poor - more like Sweden and less like India. Most things are better in Canada than the USA, except the weather. Newcomers never grasp how really cold and miserable it can be here until they experience it. The only folks who "get it" are Russians and Norwegians. Language is a defining issue here. In the USA, services in Spanish are often offered, but only as a courtesy. In Canada French is an official language co-equal with English. Getting a job with the Federal government or even the more important provinces, requires proficiency in both languages. Religion gets in the way at times as it does in most countries, but is not a defining issue as it seems to be in the USA. One rarely hears a public official invoking the deity of the week in an official capacity.

I grew up in Vancouver and lived in Victoria, Toronto, and Edmonton. I now live near Seattle and have lived in a bunch of places in the US. In my experience in general, people in Canada are a little nicer, more inclusive, less religious (and religion is less of a topic of conversation), more tolerant of multiculturalism. Canada is cleaner, more pristine, and not one single person has ever become bankrupt because they got sick.

They have a skills based immigration system so if you have a professional job and appropriate degrees, you can likely get in. If I still had Landed Immigrant status, I'd be living in or around Victoria.

I guess it really depends on what part of Canada. We are a big country with diverse people. For the most part we are pretty laid back. The economy had taken a hit the last few years but we are bouncing back. If we know more about what you like and what you’re looking for we might be able to direct you to cities or areas that might suit you best. I mean the hustle and bustle of Toronto is nothing likes the backwoods of Yukon. I’m not sure an all inclusive summary of Canada is really possible or accurate.

It’s like the US but without Trump, currently our PM is more Obama like. A mostly free healthcare. 🙂

And of course there are recent changes to US income tax laws that are significant for US citizens living “abroad”
