Canadians, thought of as peace loving, kind, and moderate people, must admit we have this dirty little secret sitting in plain sight. Our nation's policies, since before Confederation, in concert with prejudice and stereotypes has created an environment that promoted ongoing violence within our borders. This manifestation of sexualized violence perpetrated upon Indigenous women and girls, fulfils the five conditions of genocide as outlined by the United Nations. Have a listen to lawyer and advocate Pam Palmater to understand more about the results of the MMIWG inquiry.

The city where I was born, the city of Montreal, was founded in 1642 by a group of French catholic missionaries who had two objectives: to open an outpost for the fur trade and to convert the Mohawks and the Wendats (Hurons) to the catholic religion. I think that sums up pretty much what the European nations did on the American continent: to strip off the First Nations of everything they had, their land, their culture, their languages, their identities, their lives all in the name of a so-called supremacy and the reckless exploitation of the natural resources.
Too often, the First Nations are like a third world within our own borders. To admit our wrongs is one thing, to bring back fairness is another. It takes political will and the funds to go with it, something that our leaders never even came close to have. It mostly takes the will to stand up against the corporations that sees the First Nations as an obstacle in their way of reaching for the resources of the land (mines, oil), the forests (lumber) and the rivers (hydro dams).

I wish our governments would deal with all the native people and get everything settled once and for all,,there are so many treatys they must contend ,with some stuff is slowly going on,each governments says a lot but they do not have the balls to get out there and do it. I think they are afraid,,native people need to be involved in all the major decsions that effect our/their country ,They could have all this done with in 3 years,,lot of very progressive reserves, All money given to the reserves must be accounted for each fisical year,,they did make that a law but did not really enforce it so a lot of money is going to a few select chiefs and the rest of the reservation receives very litle of it, Trudeau government said that they did not have to have the audit books each year,,what a shame,,
