Hey all,
Has anyone here ever worked for elections Canada (specifically advanced voting and voting day)?
I applied and am not sure what to expect as a poll worker or registration officer (have not decided which position to take).
Can anyone share their experiences like how many hours you worked and what was expected of you and any other helpful tips? That way I can tell them which position I definitively want on my interview.
And yes I read the brief descriptions of the job provided but they don't go into the nitty gritty details of each position the way someone that has worked a job would.
Thanks
I did it a few times for provincial elections but never on the federal level. I think what will make a difference is if the people you are working with are sent by one of the political parties or not. People sent by a political party might try to bend things on their side, so I suggest you keep an eye open, especially when you will count the votes after closing time.
I and my wife have done this job many times over the years but not this year, we are just too bus with our new electric bike company to find the time this time around. You basically get one of two jobs, poling clerk or returning officer and it is very important to stay on top of things early on because you have to match your count of people who voted against those same number of ballots issued, otherwise you will be doing a lot of recounting. Learn the rules about scrutineers as some of the party faithful tend to be a pain in the butt but usually they are fine so long as you know the rules. Voting is one of the few truly democratic rights that we have so it is a trust that must not be betrayed. People already have the feeling that their vote no longer counts, having a bad experience at the polls only strengthens that opinion and make it less likely that they will vote next time, the pay is crap but the job is so important.
The jobs i beleive are pretty basic,,making names off handing out ballots, collecting them, put in a box in front of the person, not really sure about the count afterwards, but nothing you can not easily handle but more than likely it will be a long day and evening for you,,but probably worht while as you get to see first hand how the system works
