Hi, All,

As I wait for my bathroom remodel to happen, I want to put up two (possibly) three "floating" shelves for my cat Bug. He's about 14 lbs, so if I get shelves that support 20 lbs, I should be good right? Has anyone done this for their cat? Any advice or recommendations?

Thank you!

I'm considering same. I have an 18 pounder. A true chonk, he may not even avail himself of the shelving, but other cats might.

Make sure they are screwed into studs, or they will float right down to the floor. 14 lbs. That is a heavy cat. All fur? =0}

Unless you want the shelves to come down, you really have to over engineer them. The cat will pull himself up, launch off them and if there is a way to (accidently) break them, then it will happen. You have to figure your cats weight plus all the tork he can generate. And, what if you unexpectedly get a 2nd or 3rd cat?

Cat shelves, IMO, should be able to hold up the weight of an 7 or 8 year old child.

@orange_girl Cats will usually eventually get along. When my nephew moved back in bringing his new cat, there was some tension for a few months, but now they may not all get along, but they tolerate each other without hissing of fighting.

I always thought when getting cats that it would be best to get a pair of litter mates. They would get along, and woudl not get lonely if I am away from the house for a long period of time.

Make the shelves stronger to support your cat while he launches off of the shelf or is landing on it with more G-force.
