Silly? Silly like Inquisition silly? Or like Conquistadore silly, or witch-burning silly? Or centuries of pogroms and Crusader silly? Or like Holocaust industrial scale murder silly?
All good questions. Read his bio.
Pretty interesting bio. I very much appreciate literary pugilism where it is applied against people like WF Buckley Jr., who Vidal repeatedly skewered though it incurred suits and settlement charges. Still, I'm with Vidal when he said to WFBJ: "As far as I'm concerned, the only sort of pro- or crypto-Nazi I can think of is yourself." Also this: "Vidal riposted in Esquire with the September 1969 essay "A Distasteful Encounter with William F. Buckley, Jr." and said that Buckley was "anti-black", "anti-semitic" and a "warmonger".
I also appreciate brevity and concision, and Vidal was fond of composing epigrams. I get that Vidal sought to use the term "silly" as a contemporaneously tolerable term to disparage religion. Still, "silly" is far too mild a term to disparage religion. I have the advantage of being able to say that decades later.
@racocn8 Perhaps he was being "polite"?
