I got an acoustic guitar back in October and decided I was finally going to learn how to play. I don't really have the time or the money to take lessons, so I find free "How to play __" vids on YouTube. Progress has been pretty slow, but I can almost play a passable version of Dear Prudence now. I thought I was just going to focus on fingerpicking, but I got distracted and started trying to play I Walk the Line with a pick. Can any of you world class musicians recommend a good semi-beginner instructional dvd to learn flatpicking and/or fingerpicking?
When I first started I was using the lessons on www.wholenote.com to learn the basics of stringing, tuning, chord construction, reading tabs. Flatpicking I learned mostly by experimentation and watching the wrist/pick grip of my favorite guitarists.
When I began finger picking I started by learning “travis picking” (named for merle Travis but I share the name so thought that was cool)... [dylanchords.info]
Go there and find the tab for Don’t Think Twice. Play the pattern of the first 6 notes until it’s second nature to your muscle memory and then slowly move on, learning the slightly modified pattern on each chord of the song. It’s some of the hardest fingerpicking I know to this day so don’t get frustrated but if you can fingerpick that, you’ll have no problem learning anything else or making up your own patterns on instinct.
¡Gracias!
@Hermit no problem, that dylanchords archive is a great resource for folk lyrics and chords that are simple and fun to play. They kept me going a long time in the early stages of learning to entertain myself. If you click the lennon chords section they also have Lennon, Mccartney and Harrison songs for days. If you ever get bored there and want to learn some new jazz chords, try Paul Simon's chord site too. These are the only two completely accurate tab/chord sites I've ever found. [paul-simon.info]
@Hermit Also when it comes to flat picking one of the more important things to practice is "alternate picking" which is just alternating between a downstroke and an upstroke 1:1. D U D U back n forth. A great simple riff to practice this on is the Allman Brothers version of One Way Out. Try playing the first line of this tab and slowly focus on going Down, Up, Down, Up with the pick for a while: [tabs.ultimate-guitar.com]
There are many products online that have good tools like videos, backing tracks, tempo control, loop control, charts, and tab. Here are links to two of them. The first one is for true beginners. The second one is more advanced.
I'm more a drummer but I do mess with a guitar.
A great little book, imo, is Zen Guitar by Philip Toshio Sudo.
Not so much a 'how to' , more an attitude adjuster.
And it's a fun read.
