Having grown up steeped in evangelical brand Christianity, I have no need whatsoever to pretend the fairy tail is real, but I do appreciate that religion is what one makes it. It is a framework for discussing and practicing some personal ethical principles in one's own life. Buttigieg seems to have cafe picked the nicer, affirming elements to espouse in his life and work. Plenty of non-politicians have done the same. It may be awfully convenient for a politician to couch things in religious terms, but given the circumstances, I relish this example of a gay man rubbing the noses of self-righteous in the irony of their own hypocritical hateful interpretations of doctrine that they claim to be based in love.

Thing is, Buttigieg is a fake Christian because he lives by his own rules, not his religion's. The others are the very same for the same reason but Buttigieg is being accepted as a bona-fide Christian which really threatens the mainstream.
