Berkeley bans gender-specific words [syracuse.com]
The American Psychological Association was doing this with APA papers in the 1980's - if the efforts had continued for gender neutrality - we wouldn't be trying to make it happen now.
I wrote papers in this format back in the late 80's.
Sure took it's time finding a place to land.
The point being there is a gender bias towards papers being about men or women - when in fact - both participants are almost always used. It was ridiculous. And the scientists noticed.
We do this gender bias in a lot of places you'd never even notice.
Some of the comments below are a bit moronic. The city isn't banning anyone from saying "he" or "she". They are removing gender specific words from college text, city forms and when referencing certain things such as manhole covers and fraternities. They aren't banning genders or censoring how people refer to each other.
This isn't anything radical. Get a grip people.
@icolan Bingo! The latter.
Wow what a nice way to bring that to members attention. Thanks!
Additionally they're doing what I expected in the city code "That means “manpower” will become “human effort” or “workforce,” while masculine and feminine pronouns like “she,” ''her," ''he" and “him” will be replaced by “they” and “them,” according to the measure approved Tuesday by the City Council.".
Not a bad idea. It will be hard to go without genders - but it's a fascinating social experiment.
I can picture a coffee shop saying "Hey you in the red dress" - or "person with short blonde hair - order up". It might actually require more words - and thought be put into what people say - before they say it.
Also Manholes - can be "Access hatches". Way more this century. Women have been working those job a long time now.
Weird...so...you can't say...hey...look at that man, guy, girl woman...you have to say...hey...look at that INDIVIDUAL over there. IS THAT what they are looking for??? Kinda stupid, but...I guess it makes sense. To a degree for a certain kind of person.
That isn't what is says. The headline is misleading.
@MikeInBatonRouge LOL...RELAX...if i can't laugh at something STUPID...what the fuck is the sense of it all???
At first, I thought this might be a joke.

If you'd ever been to Berkeley even once.... lol
I swear they are the center of the universe of change. Plus you know - crunchy granola to the extreme. (I went just once - even I was amazed).
I wish I had a seat for this though. It going to be a fascinating social experiment to get people to throw away gender speech!
That comment section is full of right-wing conservative trumpeter shills... They are really blanketing the comment sections these days to control the narrative... And they are even quoting 1984 ironically unironically... As if they aren't the tools of Big Brother... Pretty sickening.
I've ALWAYS SAID...Dick Cheney decided to institute 1984 type philosophies figuring...WHO is going to believe it.
