I had an odd convo with a lesbian friend of mine here. I was telling her about a flash-chat I had been involved in that was about localish queer life (such as it is, which ain't much sometimes) here in SWVA. She got concerned that someone has been talking smack about her wife, which I assured her no-one was as far as I knew but that all the participants used nicks themselves and made sure not to refer to anyone else by name. She asked if this was usual. I sorta looked at her funny. Like, girl, have you never ventured off FB onto anything else? Nicks are the norm, coz....hello, trolls? Then you get to know someone on the site, exchange some deets, and THEN venture on......Idk. Is this me being weird here? Maybe.
Not weird at all. Nicknames are definitely normal, and should be preferred for most things done on the net. As you say, eventually you might divulge your name to someone, one a case-by-case basis. Then agian, I got on the net in '96 and soon found myself on IRC, so a nickname was a must. I never even considered using anything close to my actual name. Yikes!
My pen name and drag name are Testika Filch Milquetoast, here's a link to the radioplay my friends and I made: [radfae.org]
