Depends on what you consider a bad guy. Nearly all of the last 30 mass shootings purchased or acquired their guns legally and were registered.

@AdorkableMe Unless laws changed, you do not have to register a firearm. My dad just bought a M9. Doesn't need to register it. Or, any of his firearms.

@TheGreatShadow I'm just not following your original train of thought I think. My point was that the majority of weapons purchased in our most deadly shootings were purchased or acquired legally. I think those are some pretty "bad" people to do what they did. It contradicts your statement that you doubt the bad guys purchased them legally or registered. I'm not sure why you brought up again that guns are required to be registered. Long arms are required to be registered by the way, since 2014. Am I missing something? Are you trying to say something other than what you originally stated? I have a headache today. Perhaps my brain just isn't working at 100%.

@AdorkableMe Let me know when you are at 100%. I bought 3 rifles, and a pistol post '14. Bought them from FFL dealers. None are registered.

@TheGreatShadow : As you probably know, gun laws differ from state to state. You're right about the lax federal laws.

@dare2dream You are 100% correct on that. I was going to mention that, but I got side tracked. For example some states (like this one) are open carry. However for a CCW permit you need to take a 7 hour class. Then pass a written test. Then you also need to go to a range and show competency. Other states you can take an online course!

Yes, you need to know your state gun laws! I hardly ever fire a pistol, but I'd like to lock mine in the glove compartment. That's illegal. But if it's on the passenger seat, that's fine. Need to stop to grab a soda or something quick? Can't take it in because of the no gun sign. I walk in to get a soda real quick, and it'd be stolen!

Shooters often carried more than one weapon; one was found with 24. At least 168 of mass shooters’ weapons were obtained legally and 52 were obtained illegally. It’s unclear how 79 weapons were acquired.
