It's only been one day and I'm getting attacked by people already. I don't give a damn. I mean to see this to the end. Let me spell out what this is:
Ban on military style guns, high volume magazines and bump-stocks.
More and better mandatory training to own firearms.
More comprehensive background checks.
Make some type of child proof safety's on handguns mandatory.
What this is not;
Total ban on firearms.
Making any kind of list of who has what.
Taking anything away from anybody legally owning guns.
Or doing anything else to anybody that legally owns firearms, or to actively protest same.
The only other thing I would like to see is gun licenses be more like drivers licenses that expire and have to be recertified. This type of ban has been done before, which means a majority of people wanted it, and I think they still do.

Ok, I joined the group because this topic does interest me. I'm not from the US, so cannot help you there, but maybe the actual experience in other nations is useful. New Zealand and Germany are the two nations I know best.

One of the issues the pro-gun crowd likes to bring up in regards to the previous assault rifle ban, is that it was clearly designed by people who did not know guns. The legislation was more focused on the "look" of the weapon rather than on its real capabilities. Any serious legislation would need to specifically spell out what capabilities should not be allowed, and that would include certain types of ammunition too.

Another issues is the handing out of concealed weapon permits will-nilly, and the recent passage from Congress that forces states to accept another state's permit. This too is going to cause trouble sooner or later.

The biggest issue is really overcoming the fanaticism by some gun owners. It's based in my opinion on some kind of macho romanticism. They cannot seem to understand owning an assault weapon isn't going to better your odds in the event we get invaded by a hostile nation's army, civil unrest, or give you the opportunity to be a hero. Odds are you will be shot and only add more chaos to any incident. These are in essence, grown men who still yearn to play cowboys and indians.

Finally, someone with some clarity. I hear the same old arguments, you can kill with knives, bombs...
put metal detectors in schools, arm teachers (really)?...How does that help movie theatre goers, church and concert attacks? Automatic weapons are dangerous everywhere, 'designed for mass killings.
The 2nd Amendment needs to be repealed like many of the articles of the Constitution, it is outdated.
It is not hard to understand that a document authored in 1791 may be outdated.

We have all of that in Connecticut. (See Sandy Hook shooting). Legally you are supposed to have a trigger guard and locked case. Kid got the gun from his Mom. Who I believe owned it legally.

Totally agree with no need for rapid fire guns/bump stocks etc.... We do have to get re licensed. I have no idea if they do a CORI check or not? But I've been fingerprinted to own a weapon.

Also some sort of mental health check - even if you had to go get an exam.

I bet you aren't getting attacked here - but on FB where some folk just keep saying "2nd Amendment" even though it was auto-load muskets back then? (two minutes to maybe kill one person).

I am getting it here, this is the only place I have done this. I am talking in general, I don't know the gun laws in every state

@MikeFlora No I am not attacking you! Just saying - we have most of that in this State and it still happened. So yes more of what you are saying - and definite Mental Health Checks (Which I've been attacked for saying.... sigh).

I would add: Reintroduce the ban on assault rifles that bush let expire in 2004.

CS60 Level 7 Feb 16, 2018

Absolutely! The rate of killings from these guns went down dramatically when the ban was in place and predictability rose again when the ban expired and was not renewed.

I'm down. It all sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I've been saying much the same.
Getting attacked for it, too. Don't let it bother you. Some folks are just as entrenched in
their gun culture as those who are entrenched in their religious beliefs.
On most other issues, most people around here get along much better.
This particular issue is pushing a lot of people's buttons.
Btw, welcome to the asylum! Enjoy your stay!

I'm not bothered, just determined. I would like to believe we are better than this.

@MikeFlora Most of us are.

"Gun as Religion" - OMG that's why this is making me want to hit these folks? Ok and rationality.

@RavenCT I don't understand somebody seeing all these mass shootings have been by AR-15 and still not want any gun control.

@MikeFlora It's baffling to me.
Except for the NRA. And people believing them.

@RavenCT Yep. Same shit, different subject.

I'm totally with you.
