I think we need to say how sorry we are to all of the people and families directly affected by mass shootings because we didn't do anything to stop this a long time ago. also to the parents and kids who have to deal with mass shooter drills.
What are we going to tell the next one... and the next one... and the next one... a 7th grader just shot himself allegedly yesterday in a school bathroom, died today. Somebody else will die, this week, next week. the week after. Are we gonna run out of "sorry" as a christian runs out of prayers?

If we don't do something about it the next one we will be partly to blame
You must have watched the news conference or the news? I'm still feeling "Bleck".
This is what should have continued and apparently didn't. <see below> Also long term care facilities for the mentally ill who can not be maintained in an unlocked facility. They might actually need to start paying people a working wage in this field as well.
I worked for a Mobile Crisis team from 1988 - on into the late 90's. (We were the first one in Massachusetts - 2nd in the Nation). We were often called into schools for at risk teens. We worked in conjunction with the police and with a psychiatrist (available by phone) to get the person the help they needed. The cops took training in how to "Pink paper" (commit someone) and about the legalities surrounding it. We worked together with many Police Departments - and they were trained. We also worked alone in a team of two - but that was with clients whose diagnosis was well known. Anyone from a family member to an official could call in to have Mental Status Exam done if there were warning sighs.
We've lost so much ground in the Mental Health field. It is incredibly underfunded. And it should be a field requiring at least a 4 year degree. (Otherwise you have people working out their issues with patients).
